Obama Weighs Afghan ‘Zero Option’
The president is considering removing all troops from Afghanistan by 2014, also known as the “zero option.”
American and European officials told The New York Times the administration was seriously considering the “zero option” after Afghan President Hamid Karzai criticized U.S. talks with the Taliban in June and then a video conference with the White House ended poorly.
A senior administration official confirmed the story to CNN, saying the idea has been gaining momentum.
Officials stressed to the outlets that there were still other options under consideration, but the idea of no troops had gone from a worst-case scenario to a serious possibility.
