Pope: Christmas ‘hostage’ to materialism
Pope Francis has an important Christmas message.
Click here for reuse options!Pope Francis said on Saturday that Christmas had been “taken hostage” by dazzling materialism that puts God in the shadows and blinds many to the needs of the hungry, the migrants and the war weary.
Francis, leading the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics into Christmas for the fourth time since his election in 2013, said in his Christmas Eve homily that a world often obsessed with gifts, feasting and self-centeredness needed more humility.
“If we want to celebrate Christmas authentically, we need to contemplate this sign: the fragile simplicity of a small newborn, the meekness of where he lies, the tender affection of the swaddling clothes. God is there,” the Pope said at St. Peter’s Basilica.

You could buy a man’s suit for $40 back then.
anothertoothpick December 25th, 2016 at 09:57
…and American made too.
.
Larry Schmitt December 25th, 2016 at 10:45
Some of the ones advertised were English made, but not for $40. The same suit today would be many hundreds of dollars, and probably made in Central America or Asia.

See what the dirty lying liberal media brings ya…
‘it’s all lies and distortion’, (so says Kellyanne Conway)

Isn’t that the subtitle on Fox News? “Fox News: It’s All Lies and Distortion!”

Andrew Greeley, the novelist who was also a priest, had a more realistic view of Christmas. He saw nothing wrong with commercialism, as it supported such a large part of the economy and provided jobs for so many people. It’s the attitude of the people, and the importance they place on getting “things” that matter, not the fact of buying and getting.
StoneyCurtisll December 25th, 2016 at 14:56
Right…
And as a non-believer, I have no problem with greeting people with a hardy Marry Christmas..
Happy Holidays or what ever the holiday superscribes..
Be it Ramadan, Chanuka, or Rastapharian days…
It’s all good to me.
labman57 December 25th, 2016 at 11:38
I daresay that if you took the commercialization out of Christmas, the holiday would only have a fraction of its current popularity in America and elsewhere.

Dasher – drug mule
Dancer – gigolo
Prancer – gay
Vixen – slut
Comet – powderhead
Cupid – sexual predator
Donner – cannibal
Blitzen – Neo-Nazi
Rudolph – Red nose from hanging with Comet and smelling cocaine
Quite the cabinet you got there, Santa!

Nothing wrong with that. It’s peanuts compared to what’s been taken from the public
Um Cara December 25th, 2016 at 12:45
Nobody’s forcing anyone to celebrate Christmas in any specific way, Mr. Pope. Folks can be as commersh or not as they want.

Every time I hear a word from this backward collar wearing, long skirt wearing, beads wearing, baby kissing, old buzzard, I think of the handicapped children that the pedophile priest were molesting, FOR YEARS in South America. I just read about it yesterday and I was truly sicken and this SOB, knew about it, but did nothing. I give less than a damn about what he says or thinks. I know this is off the topic, but that is how I feel about him and his cult religion. F him.
Larry Schmitt December 25th, 2016 at 21:11
I like to say that I grew up Catholic, then I grew up. I feel the same way about the church as you do.

So the Pope rails about materialism from the gold and gem encrusted altar of the Vatican while putting on a show with a plastic baby Jesus…
Do they have a word for irony in Latin
bunya December 26th, 2016 at 17:08
If the pope had some compassion for the needs of the hungry, the migrants and the war weary, perhaps he should share some of that $3 billion plus, tax exempt cash he and his ilk earned by bilking money out of old ladies on fixes incomes by threatening them with eternal damnation. But no. He had to use some of it to buy a $14,000 diamond encrusted manger for the Vatican nativity scene – just like Jesus had.
.
I can’t believe people haven’t caught onto this religious ponzi scheme yet.
