One in three Americans obese
Americans are eating a lot more chicken, breads, oils, cheese and yogurt than 40 years ago — actually, they’re just eating a lot more in general, a Pew Research Center analysis of Department of Agriculture data showed Tuesday. The average American consumed 2,481 calories in 2010, far in excess of what is necessary to maintain weight…

It’s a serious health issue. What we think is healthy usually isn’t. Many yogurts have as much sugar as ice cream, and the most sugar laden cereal I could find was actually billed as “all natural”. and healthy. I thought it was politically incorrect to tell fat people to just eat less. Being a fat person myself, I am offended by this article and will now consume a large quantity of holiday cookies to make myself feel better.

Telling an overweight person to eat better is no more politically incorrect than telling a person with fair skin to use sunscreen. Especially if you genuinely care about that person. Granted I was blessed with “thin” genetics and am married to a personal trainer, so I’m lucky. Too many of my friends didn’t get to walk their daughters down the isle or celebrate their 25th anniversary because Americans are deluged with garbage to eat. It’s a terrible battle. It’s like trying to stay healthy while living next to a toxic waste dump. Then there is the intimidation factor at most gyms. Believe me, I am much more impressed with an overweight person who has the courage to wade through the BS and hit the gym than the athlete who does it as part of their job.

It is hard to maintain a healthy weight also when you don’t cook/bake everything by yourself. If you look at what is in your cereal, you will get a headache. I think one reason so much of us are fat is there is a lot more fat and sugar in our foods to make it taste better.

If you check the graphs you will find that obesity in this country took a dramatic upswing right around the time the food industry switched to things like high fructose corn syrup and corn alcohol sugar. Fat really isn’t the enemy, sugar and corn syrup is. Ever wonder how they make fat free coffee creamer taste delicious? Yep. They add sugar.

I read somewhere that the sugar industry pushed hard to get people thinking about fat content in their diet while ignoring the sugar content. Basically everything has trended to “low fat” or “fat free” but as you note, the sugar content is sky high. We try hard to avoid anything with HFCS but it is in EVERYTHING.

Yes. I noticed a pattern growing up: I was one of those “weaklings” and started exercising and eating well from the 8th grade. But others were natural athletes.
The latter did not have to make much effort to get on the teams, etc., and now most are fat and out of shape.

It is the only way to lose weight or not get fat.

Eat less, stay active and EVERYTHING in moderation.
It’s working for me.

Yes. Some try to make it complicated. It is not.
