George Will: There’s a name for Carrier deal: Socialism

Posted by | December 7, 2016 20:25 | Filed under: Politics

Conservative writer George Will calls the Carrier deal what it is.

GEORGE WILL: So far Donald Trump’s style is personal, not to say visceral, and ad hoc. And what that adds up to is a kind of use of presidential power absolutely unconstrained by law and statute and all those other niceties. The problem is when you have, in the Carrier case, political power used to bring pressure upon a privately held corporation that has a fiduciary duty to maximize shareholder value and drive them off with political pressure from making economic decisions about economic assets, you are, in effect, at the end of the day, getting the federal government involved in capital allocation. There is a name for that, it’s called socialism.

Giving the shaft to workers is far from socialism

  2. Red Mann December 7th, 2016 at 21:26

I’d call it what it is, fascism.

    • Hirightnow December 7th, 2016 at 23:23

“Sign zee papers, Herr Hayes…zay are simply a formality.”

Exactly! I should have read a little further before I commented. Thx!(☯‿☯)

Actually it’s what the GOP calls “Picking winners and losers”, something they’ve railed against for 8 years.

    • StoneyCurtisll December 7th, 2016 at 23:26

      Exactly…

    • Mensa Member December 8th, 2016 at 11:38

This is what drives me crazy about conservatism:

Conservatives will completely abandon their core beliefs and not even know it.

      • Guy Lauten December 8th, 2016 at 15:40

It is my contention that they “know” it as well as the rest of us, but – as long-term brainwashed “christians” – they are so practiced at dealing with cognitive dissonance that they have no problem with ignoring the paradox of their actions vs their words.

hey big O! and yes, you’re right.

Fascism: “The problem is when you have, in the Carrier case, political power used to bring pressure upon a privately held corporation that has a fiduciary duty to maximize shareholder value and drive them off with political pressure from making economic decisions about economic assets, you are, in effect,..” Fascist!

Is Donald Trump a Fascist? Yes! (& no. 2/10/16!) http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/interrogation/2016/02/is_donald_trump_a_fascist_an_expert_on_fascism_weighs_in.html

    • Mensa Member December 8th, 2016 at 11:37

I didn’t quite understand your point.

Fascism is traditionally defined as an alliance between corporations and the government to control a country.

  6. bpollen December 8th, 2016 at 00:41

George Will is right about something?

Well, it’s been nice knowing y’all. Too bad the world’s ending.

    • Tommie December 8th, 2016 at 00:50

I saw demons leaving hell wearing jackets!

      • bpollen December 8th, 2016 at 00:56

        Leather jackets, of course.

        >>George Will is right about something?

        Nope. Not right.

Socialism, would by the government seizing Carrier for the public benefit.

Conservatism is giving our tax dollars to the rich.

And, specifically, a type of conservatism that George Will helped create.

    Corporate socialism will

    The Republican favorite pastime

Cronyism is cronyism regardless of which side of the aisle engages in it.

    • whatthe46 December 8th, 2016 at 03:53

only, in this case, it’s with tRump. and it’s not good at all. who/when was the last president accused of it?

      • TKList December 8th, 2016 at 04:26

        Obama, Solyndra.

        • whatthe46 December 8th, 2016 at 04:49

and that’s why you’re a poorly educated ass.

            • whatthe46 December 8th, 2016 at 05:12

not a tRump supporter, so, i’m good. you on the other hand, might want to do something about your hatred and racism.

              • TKList December 8th, 2016 at 06:50

I voted for Gary Johnson. Again seek professional help.

                • whatthe46 December 8th, 2016 at 07:03

the fact that you voted for him, suggest you’re the one that needs to seek help. the sh!t has hit the fan. and people are being murdered in the name of tRump, before his election, and have been embolden since the election. and your dumbass protest vote for someone who had absolutely NO chance of winning, is why we’re here. so, when you lose your medicare or your S.S., that you’ve worked your ass off to receive when you retire, don’t bitch ok. you deserve being screwed over by tRump. that being said, yeah, ya voted for tRump.

                      >> Again seek professional help.

                      Diatribe. You lose.

        • Carla Akins December 8th, 2016 at 04:54

No, the Obama administration (like all others before it) offered incentives to support a pillar of its platform, in this case, renewable energy. Companies applied for public dollars after meeting certain predetermined criteria and were selected to be recipients of essentially grant money. That is not what happened with Carrier.

          • TKList December 8th, 2016 at 06:51

            Still cronyism.

            • arc99 December 8th, 2016 at 10:44

              cro·ny·ism
              ˈkrōnēˌizəm/Submit
              nounderogatory

              ———————————————————————————
Please tell us what friends of President Obama received positions of authority or assistance at Solyndra without regard to their qualifications.

Libertarians are an odd lot. I actually like a lot of their candidates. It is their supporters who are typically misinformed and obnoxious. You continue the tradition.

              • TKList December 8th, 2016 at 12:53

“Cronyism is the practice of partiality in awarding jobs and other advantages to friends or trusted colleagues, especially in politics and between politicians and supportive organizations. ”

“The administration fast-tracked Solyndra’s loan guarantee through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act—i.e. the stimulus—perhaps because Solyndra’s principal backers just happened to have donated huge sums to the Obama election campaign. Washington guaranteed more than a half-billion in loans to Solyndra on the promise of 4,000 jobs.”

        • Mensa Member December 8th, 2016 at 11:42

          >> Solyndra.

Solyndra received a loan that was generally available after the GOP crashed the economy.

YOU could have gotten a loan if you owned a business.

This is not a custom-made “deal” between the president and a single company.

          • TKList December 8th, 2016 at 12:45

The collusion between the federal government and banks with the Federal Reserve, FDIC, FHA, HUD, Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, Community Reinvestment Act and more is what led to the financial crisis.

When government gets in bed with big business we get: ratings agencies rubber stamping investments, regulators looking the other way, banks giving liar loans, the government bailing out banks and taxpayers paying for everything.

Abolish the Fed, FDIC, FHA, HUD, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. Repeal the Community Reinvestment Act.

  9. Mensa Member December 8th, 2016 at 11:29

    note to George Will:

    It’s not socialism, is conservatism.

The brand of conservatism YOU helped to make.

  10. shocktreatment December 8th, 2016 at 16:33

As neither Carrier nor its parent have become “owned or regulated by the community as a whole”, Georgey-boy reveals, yet again, that he is willing to bend the truth to make a point or at least think he has.

What this is, in reality, is Trump buying positive PR (for the gullible), and the lame stream media letting him get away with it, unchallenged.
