Click here for reuse options!A new study of the planet’s tides has revealed that ‘tidal braking’ is resulting in longer days.
However, don’t panic – the difference is 1.8 thousandths of a second per century, meaning an Earth day will not last 25 hours for about two million centuries more.
The main braking effect comes from tides caused by the moon’s gravity.
‘The heaping up of water drags on the Earth as it spins underneath,’ said Morrison.
