Trump’s call to Taiwan a diplomatic breach

Posted by | December 2, 2016 17:51 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

He has business dealing there, but that takes precedence over our our “one China” policy.

The Financial Times, citing three sources, reports that Trump called Tsai Ying-wen, the president of Taiwan, on Friday. The call is a symbolic breach of the United States’ “One China” policy, which recognizes Beijing as the only government, that has been in place since 1972…

The call will antagonize China and risks “opening up a major diplomatic dispute with China before he has even been inaugurated.”

The incident is raising eyebrows because the Trump Organization, in which Trump plans to maintain ownership as president, is actively seeking new business opportunities in Taiwan. The Shanghaiist reported on the Trump Organization’s interest last month:

Is there a pool on when he starts the first war. I’m going with February 2017.

    • whatthe46 December 2nd, 2016 at 18:10

and the RWNJ’s don’t give a damn. he doesn’t know anything about politics, he’s using this as an outreach to become richer and it’s dangerous. the EC better do their jobs.

      • Larry Schmitt December 2nd, 2016 at 18:11

As I’ve said before, the list of thing trump doesn’t know would break the internet. And he keeps proving it every f*cking day.

        • whatthe46 December 2nd, 2016 at 18:18

and the fool isn’t even using a secure line. with the RWNJ it’s about party not country. they don’t care if a war starts. i’m sure haliburton would be called upon and cheney could make a few extra billions.

and the fool isn’t even using a secure line.

I was thinking someone we could easily defeat, who doesn’t have a big brother (think Vietnam) to stick up for them.

China also has a sovereignty dispute with Tibet. That didn’t stop Obama from meeting with the Dalai Lama at the White House.

And it is not clear who called whom. Trump is claiming that the Taiwanese leader called him, not the other way around.

      • Buford2k11 December 3rd, 2016 at 10:46

Not the same thing…not even close…Fox news is misinformation, disinformation, and can lead to a bad case of derp….

        • Robert M. Snyder December 3rd, 2016 at 11:21

          Dear Derp,

Read this and then tell me how they are different:

“China promises “dire consequences” if foreign political leaders meet the Dalai Lama. In giving in to bullying by Beijing, governments are allowing an undemocratic regime which routinely abuses human rights the power to dictate policy to them. They are also turning their backs on the Dalai Lama’s standing as a representative of peace, and the hopes of the Tibetan people.”

“The Dalai Lama has passed all political power in the exile Tibetan community to a democratically elected parliament and prime minister. While he continues to advocate for the preservation of Tibet’s religion, culture, language and environment, he does not support Tibetan independence and has proposed a Middle Way Approach, in which Tibet remains a part of the People’s Republic of China but has greater control of its own affairs.”

“Because of his profile and popularity, China objects strongly to political leaders from other nations meeting him. In recent years, senior figures in the governments of the UK, France, Germany, Norway and South Africa among others have avoided meeting the Dalai Lama, although US presidents do continue to receive him.”

“he does not support Tibetan independence and has proposed a Middle Way Approach, in which Tibet remains a part of the People’s Republic of China but has greater control of its own affairs.”

He also doesn’t buy military technology from the US…
You’re shooting blanks at the side of a barn and missing.

          • StoneyCurtisll December 3rd, 2016 at 12:07

            False equivalence…

          • bpollen December 3rd, 2016 at 16:42

Why do I not find anything surprising about your conflation of a RELIGIOUS LEADER with an INDEPENDENT NATION? Taiwan WAS a member of the UN… when was the Dalai Lama a member? What is the population of Dalai Lama and is he a parliamentary form of government? What is the Capital City of Dalai Lama? Countries have specific boundaries and GPS coordinates… what are the DL’s? Can he overthrow himself and install himself into power and put the previous leader of himself in prison? Does he have mineral resources?

            • Robert M. Snyder December 3rd, 2016 at 17:25

Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibet, which has a population of 3.18 million. This is slightly less than the population of the West Bank and Gaza. If the Palestinians matter, then the Tibetans matter too.

Taiwan has a population of 23.5 million. Trump showed respect to the Taiwanese leader by accepting her call. I don’t know if the call was prearranged. Perhaps it was.

The White House staff showed disrespect to the Dalai Lama by requiring him to enter and exit the building through a back door next to which was a pile of garbage.

              • bpollen December 3rd, 2016 at 18:20

Tibet is a country. The DL is not. Still baffled by the difference between humans and countries, I see. As they used to say on Sesame Street: “One of these things is not like the other.”

By your lights, badmouthing the Pope is an attack on Italy. And a large part of South America and Central America. And, if individual beings are indistinguishable from political states, then those harsh words would be an act of war.

Tibet matters. The DL is not Tibet. The Pope is not Italy. The Pharoah was NOT Egypt. Yitzhak Yosef and David Lau are not Israel. Your sense of discernment is kaput if you can’t differentiate between John Welby and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

tRump has claimed many, many things, bob.

All I can do is laugh at that…

      • StoneyCurtisll December 3rd, 2016 at 11:58

Trump is claiming that the Taiwanese leader called him, not the other way around….
And you believe what Trump tells you?
        Don’t be a fool..

      • Suzanne McFly December 5th, 2016 at 22:36

Well the news is, is this call was planned but I am sure you have absolutely no problem with that, why would you? You voted for a racist, sexist, bigot and you are continuing to defend him. You prove homeschooling has failed us all.

        • Robert M. Snyder December 6th, 2016 at 05:49

In case you haven’t noticed, a large segment of the population no longer pays any attention to those labels (e.g. racist, sexist, bigot).

When a kindergarten boy kisses a female classmate on the cheek, he is labeled a sexist. When a college student wears a sombrero on Halloween night, she is labeled a racist.

The words have been so overused that they have completely lost their power. When people on the Left use words like that, they are basically just shooting blanks. Regular folks now realize that they can never live up to the Left’s impossible standards, so they no longer care what the Left thinks. The Left has made itself irrelevant.

          • Suzanne McFly December 7th, 2016 at 13:08

Stick with that belief and maybe you will convince one other person in the world that you are making a valid point.

            • Robert M. Snyder December 7th, 2016 at 13:55

Have you been asleep for the past couple of years? Nobody takes those labels seriously anymore. These days, when most people hear someone use words like racist or bigot, they say to themselves “Oh. It’s just another one of those annoying left-wing radicals. Ignore them and maybe they’ll go away.”.

Wake up and smell the coffee, Rip van Winkle!

              • Suzanne McFly December 8th, 2016 at 14:33

You assume and that simply makes you an ass. I know a lot of people and none would ever take it lightly if they were called a racist, sexist, or a bigot. I guess you have to tell yourself that so you can look at your mug in the mirror, but your types will never be accepted so go back into your hole.

                • Robert M. Snyder December 8th, 2016 at 20:14

“and that simply makes you an ass”

Please be more specific. Did you mean “smart ass” or “dumb ass”?

                  P.S. – I think you’re cute when you’re angry. :-)

                  • Suzanne McFly December 8th, 2016 at 20:52

I will let you decide which ass you want to be and I prefer adorable and not cute. Cute is a kid and a lollipop, adorable is a strong woman with an opinion she can back up.

                    • Robert M. Snyder December 8th, 2016 at 21:35

“…a strong woman with an opinion she can back up.”

I admire women like that. I’ve been married to one for 31 years!

Trump’s philosophy of international relations and diplomacy:

            • bpollen December 3rd, 2016 at 05:29

Kinda reminds me of the Mad Woman of Minnesota, Michelle Bachmann, who said “…carbon dioxide is portrayed as harmful. But there isn’t one such study because carbon dioxide is not a harmful gas, it is a harmless gas.” Some of her fellow idiots will say that it is what plants breathe so it can’t be harmful.

To show how stupid these ideas are, we can look at water. All life requires water, so it can’t be harmful. When you are stuck in the grate at the bottom of the pool, you might change your perspective.

Ahhh, isn’t it great to now have a Climate Denier Executive Branch?
