Mike Pence took a clear ‘mislead’ in Veep debate

And how did he do that? Let us count the ways:

He blamed Secretary Clinton for the nation’s Iraq policy — created by Bush, and supported by Trump!

“And we removed all our troops from Iraq.”
Yet the 2011 deadline for pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq was negotiated and signed by President George W. Bush in 2008. President Obama, and his Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, inherited that plan.
Notably, Clinton warned in March 2008 that too quick a withdrawal of troops could be problematic, telling the Council on Foreign Relations, that “we cannot allow Iraq to become a breeding ground and safe haven for terrorists,” and that her plan “will not mean retreating from fighting terrorism in Iraq.”
Meanwhile, Donald Trump was among the most vocal supporters at the time for immediate troop withdrawal. In 2006, Trump told CNBC that the U.S. should simply declare “Victory! Tremendous!” and withdraw from Iraq immediately, and “let them have their civil war.”

He falsely claimed that Clinton wants open borders:

Mike Pence warned in the vice presidential debate that Clinton would create open borders — a claim his running mate has also made.

Clinton has never proposed open borders — which would mean allowing people to travel between two countries freely or with few restrictions. She hasn’t even proposed cutting funding for border control. In 2013, she supported a bill that would have invested billions more in border security. Clinton has also explicitly said that she will enforce immigration laws, including deporting criminals and individuals who pose a threat to public safety.

She is also not calling for total amnesty. While it’s true that she has proposed to implement comprehensive immigration reform including a pathway to citizenship within the first 100 days.

Trump has made similar claims in the past, which Politifact rated “false.”

He said police officers don’t have implicit bias, but the numbers don’t lie:

Study after study finds that police use their personal biases in their work.

“The only thing that was significant in predicting whether someone shot and killed by police was unarmed was whether or not they were black,” Justin Nix, a criminal-justice researcher at the University of Louisville and an author of one recent report, told the Washington Post. “Crime variables did not matter in terms of predicting whether the person killed was unarmed.”

At least 194 black Americans have been killed by police so far this year.

He said “Stop-and-Frisk: works, but it’s actually ineffective – and illegal:

In August 2013, a judge ruled that the New York Police Department carried out searches in a “racially discriminatory manner” and disregarded individual’s right to privacy. The judge ordered remedies and a federal monitor to oversee the department.
Then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg appealed the ruling, but current Mayor Bill de Blasio dropped the appeal after coming into office.
But even before it was banned, the practice was far from successful. Over a period of ten years, approximately 5 million people, largely African Americans and Latinos, were stopped by the NYPD. Roughly nine out of 10 walked away without an arrest or a ticket.

He misled about the Clinton Foundation and Secretary Clinton’s meetings:

The AP’s analysis included just 154 of Clinton’s meetings over two years as Secretary of State. It excluded all of her meetings with domestic and foreign government officials — the vast majority of people a Secretary of State spends time meeting. Given that she in fact had over 1,700 meetings over that time period, fewer that 5 percent of her meetings were actually with Clinton Foundation donors.

Pence also feels that calling someone “deplorable” is worse than labelling someone a “rapist” or “murderer”:

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence hammered Hillary Clinton and Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) for running an “insult-driven campaign” during the vice presidential debate Tuesday and said that Clinton’s comment about Donald Trump supporters being “deplorables” is worse than anything that Trump has said.

In response, Kaine said Trump has said some awful things, and he pointed out that Clinton apologized for the comment and that Trump has not apologized for any of his.

“Did Donald Trump apologize for calling women ‘slobs,’ ‘pigs,’ ‘dogs,’ ‘disgusting’?” Kaine asked. “Did he apologize for saying African Americans are living in hell? Did he apologize for saying President Obama was not even a citizen of the United States? You will look in vain to see Donald Trump ever taking responsibility for anybody and apologizing.”

Both vp candidates seemed nervous and overly defensive.I guess that’s understandable considering the pressure both are under and the emotionally charged campaign. The Trump derogatory statements that Kaine noted, are all recorded and well documented.Pence shook his head a lot,but could not defend Trump on those statements since he knows they are true. His talking points against Hillary were not factual, and the talking heads who analyzed the debate, clearly pointed that out with facts.Trumps whole campaign is based on off the wall accusations that do not hold up under proper scrutiny.

  3. jybarz October 5th, 2016 at 03:07

I couldn’t see why some say Pence won. He didn’t answer straightly (crooked lies) nor defended Trump. He did the usual political acrobatic answer: the way to answer when you’re not answering the questions. Typical repuke.

I think Kaine did a great job in bringing up many issues especially dirty ones on con-man Trump issues.

  4. dewired4u October 5th, 2016 at 03:08

Kain did a payback interrupting Pence for Trump interrupting Clinton 50+ times. The pundits missed that….right over their heads.

    • Budda October 5th, 2016 at 07:54

I couldn’t believe the ‘horror’ some righties had over Kaines interruptions yet said nothing about tRumps….pointing out their bias.

  5. west coast raffy October 5th, 2016 at 03:18

“implicit bias” is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard of.

I took the “Harvard test” when I first heard about it in 2008- it said my 44 yr old suburban white ass was “slightly biased towards blacks”. Then, I played the game. Second try got me “very favorable towards blacks”, I went the other way the 3rd time, and it said I was more of a Klansman than Robert Byrd.

It’s “psuedoscience” pretending to be profound… If you can read without moving your lips, you can get any answer you want…

    • Carla Akins October 5th, 2016 at 03:52

You shouldn’t need a test to understand implicit bias, it’s simple common sense.

  6. Carla Akins October 5th, 2016 at 06:45

    and you made my point.

  7. Suzanne McFly October 5th, 2016 at 07:19

Considering who he was defending, his only choice was to lie. They have to appease their supporters right now and everyone knows those people are allergic to facts so Pence just helped to solidify their support with deplorable’s.

Blacks are more likely to be sentenced to prison for the same crime than Whites. One third of people of color sentenced to prison would have received a shorter or non-incarcerative sentence if they had been treated in court the same way as White defendants facing similar charges

Although Black Americans make up only 12.7% of the U.S. population, they make up 48.2% of adults in federal, state, or local prisons and jails. According to the 1998 federal National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA), 72% of users were White and 15% were Blacks.

Latinos represent just 11.1% of the U.S. population and only 10% of U.S. drug users, yet are 18.6% of the U.S. prison population and 22.5% of those convicted for drug offenses.

On average, 1 in 25 adult American Indians is under the jurisdiction of the nation’s criminal justice system – more than twice the number of White adults in the system.

42.5% of prisoners on Death Row are Black, more than three times the percentage of Black Americans in the national population.

In 2003, in the United States, White people were imprisoned at a rate of 376 per every 100,000 in the population, compared to 709 per 100,000 American Indians, 997 per 100,000 Latinos and 2,526 per 100,000 Blacks in the population.

Black males have a 32% chance of serving time in prison at some point in their lives; Hispanic males have a 17% chance; White males have a 6% chance. If current rates of incarceration continue, about 1 in 3 Black males, 1 in 6 Hispanic males and 1 in 17 White males are expected to go to prison at some point during their lives.

Black youth are more likely to be detained than White youth. Moreover, Black youth with no prior admissions were six times more likely to be incarcerated in a juvenile facility than a White youth with a similar history. Latino youth were three times more likely to be imprisoned.

Among persons over age 24, Blacks (11.2%) were significantly more likely to be pulled over while driving than Whites (8.9%).

Among drivers stopped for speeding, Blacks (75.7%) and Hispanics (79.4%) were more likely than Whites (66.6%) to be ticketed

Police were more likely to conduct a search of the vehicle and/or driver in traffic stops involving Black male drivers (15.9%) or Hispanic male drivers (14.2%), compared to White male drivers (7.9%).

Although crack and cocaine are virtually the same thing, Congress has assigned far harsher penalties to crimes involving crack, a drug primarily associated with people of color. In 1988, Congress passed a law that created a 100:1 quantity ratio between the amount of crack and powder cocaine needed to produce certain mandatory minimum sentences for trafficking and created mandatory minimum penalties for simple possession.

Crack is the only drug with a mandatory prison sentence for a first offense simple possession. The maximum sentence someone can receive for simple possession of powder cocaine is one year.

Not only are crack and powder cocaine simply different forms of the same drug, but crack is primarily thought of as a drug used in Black, urban areas. Powder cocaine, on the other hand, is far more expensive than crack and is associated with wealthy White users.

Roughly two-thirds of crack cocaine users are White or Hispanic, but 84.5% of defendants convicted of crack possession in 1994 were Black, while 10.3% were White and 5.2% were Hispanic. The majority of persons charged with crack trafficking offenses in the federal system have also been African American (88.3%).

In 1998-1999, Black Americans consisted of only 15% of all U.S. drug users, yet they were 36.8% of those arrested for drug violations. In 2000, Blacks were 53% of those convicted by state courts for drug offenses.

Cato; The social consequences of mass incarceration have been devastating for poor African American communities, and there is no evidence that policymakers or policy experts seriously weighed these costs when designing a highly punitive system of criminal justice.

    >> In 2006, Trump told CNBC that the U.S. should simply declare “Victory!
Tremendous!” and withdraw from Iraq immediately, and “let them have
    their civil war.”

Wow, I feel conflicted about Trump’s statement.

I think we should have gotten out much earlier than we did. (I thought we never should have gotten in.)

But it’s nauseating for Trump to glibly say, “let them have their civil war.”

Well, Trump got what he wanted and it’s pure horror.

  10. Mensa Member October 5th, 2016 at 09:54

I wish Kayne had hammered a wedge between Pence and Trump.

Pence was brought on to deliver the conservative Christian vote because Trump is offensive to those people.

Especially on the abortion issue — if Trump doesn’t want women jailed for having an abortion, then he’s out-of-step with conservative Christians.

I’m pretty sure Pence wants these women punished. He believes they are killing their babies.

I wish Kayne had hammed that home more.

    • Mensa Member October 5th, 2016 at 09:56

Or the multiple wives — conservative Christians believe remarriage is open, on-going adultery.

Does Pence think his second and third wives are legitimate marriages? If he says “yes” this put him at odds with his base.

“whipping out that Mexican thing” is what will be remembered from this debate, and here is the best response:

      2020.

Mike pence firmly believes he has god on his side.

The bad news for him is that God is on OUR side.

          • whatthe46 October 5th, 2016 at 20:22

boy their “god” likes playing tricks on them right? every last one of them said “god” picked them to be the president and then, BAM nope.

      • Hirightnow October 5th, 2016 at 20:02

If Trump screws the pooch on this one, “Pence/Palin” may have to wait until 2028

  13. Bunya October 5th, 2016 at 13:38

I liked the spirited debate – until the last question when the moderator asked about the candidates’ religious beliefs. Who cares? If both candidates want to govern via their god, they should both leave the race and make room for the adults.

  14. bpollen October 5th, 2016 at 16:08

Your little screed shows that you think you know “explicit racial bias,” and show your “implicit” racial bias in the process. Poor little white boy blues…

Anecdotal evidence does NOT refute statistical evidence.
