49ers quarterback sits during National Anthem to protest racial injustice
Click here for reuse options!“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told the NFL after the game. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
Kaepernick did not tell his team about his action before the game because he’s “not looking for approval.” But in an official statement, the 49ers said it respected his right to use the moment to take a political stance:
The national anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony. It is an opportunity to honor our country and reflect on the great liberties we are afforded as its citizens. In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose and participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem.

I totally agree with him, but the backlash he’ll get from the wingnuts will be brutal.
Hope good people stand by him.
katkelly57 August 27th, 2016 at 16:08
Good on him for taking a stand…whenever someone does so, there’s always fallout…eventually many come to their senses and stand w/the originator…maybe this action will be one of many that will follow suit….unity.
whatthe46 August 27th, 2016 at 16:56
they are pissed because of why he took this stance. i call those parasites, racist and bigots.
Red Mann August 27th, 2016 at 19:35
It is very easy to arouse the ire of the right, they’re like children that way. The left tends to be more mature and reality based and less inclined to vicious, irrational demonstrations.
labman57 August 27th, 2016 at 16:28
The right to protest peacefully is the essence of Americana.
Tommie August 27th, 2016 at 18:05
Not to the right hence how many times they tweeted the n-word!
Red Mann August 27th, 2016 at 19:19
It depends on who you are and what you are protesting from the right’s point of view. For them, the BLM is a violent, terrorist, cop killing group while tRump’s racists are OK
Remember that criticizing Bush was treason but criticizing Obama is a patriotic duty.
Gary Parillo August 27th, 2016 at 19:44
Great thought.Agree totally!
Larry Schmitt August 27th, 2016 at 16:44
Check out the comments at Wash Times. The righties go nuts over something that means essentially nothing. At least one guy hopes he gets a career ending injury. They’re as bad as the Fox crowd. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/aug/27/colin-kaepernick-49ers-quarterback-sits-out-nation/
Red Mann August 27th, 2016 at 19:10
To the right, the flag is a physically sacred object demanding slavish worship. They can’t see it as a symbol.
Larry Schmitt August 27th, 2016 at 19:18
I know, but I still give them a dig whenever I can. They’re the same type that said “America, love it or leave it” during the Vietnam war.
Red Mann August 27th, 2016 at 19:37
The binary response of the playground denizens.
bpollen August 27th, 2016 at 22:25
You hear the claim that people fought and died for that flag. If so, that would mean that, for the most part, they died for a product made in China.
Larry Schmitt August 28th, 2016 at 07:18
It’s the idea behind the flag, not the piece of cloth, that they fought for. The hardcore, virulent right can’t get past the symbol, and never understand the idea. The people who fought, fought just as much for our right to not salute the flag or the anthem.
Larry Schmitt August 27th, 2016 at 16:45
I say it’s long past time we did away with the anthem before sporting events. What do the two have to do with each other? This column says it perfectly. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/garcia-time-put-national-anthem-sporting-events-article-1.2647068
whatthe46 August 27th, 2016 at 16:56

Tommie August 27th, 2016 at 18:04
I was just battling those on Mediaite over this and they were heated, I had to leave when someone didn’t have respect over my mom’s death, I was heated!
Larry Schmitt August 27th, 2016 at 19:18
There’s just no talking to some people.
Tommie August 27th, 2016 at 19:36
I saw you on the Colin thread about the National Anthem!
Larry Schmitt August 27th, 2016 at 19:50
I couldn’t resist. I put a few digs in, and now I watch them go crazy. It’s like poking a stick into a den of toothless rattlesnakes.
Tommie August 27th, 2016 at 19:52
I placed my first comments on WND and 90% of them where deleted!
Larry Schmitt August 27th, 2016 at 19:53
Yeah, the hardcore sites don’t even let you put anything up.
whatthe46 August 28th, 2016 at 04:38
only if you’re exactly like them. think like them and you’re god to go.
whatthe46 August 28th, 2016 at 04:38
toothless rattlesnakes, that’s hilarious. good one larry.
Red Mann August 27th, 2016 at 19:38
Childish insults are their stock and trade.
Tommie August 27th, 2016 at 19:51
Can’t believe my comment is pending here on this thread, what is wrong with it?
Larry Schmitt August 27th, 2016 at 19:52
Did you use the word that translates into German as Gast?
Tommie August 27th, 2016 at 19:54
I don’t even know what that word would be! Haha!
Larry Schmitt August 27th, 2016 at 19:55
Google it, you’ll find the translation. I can’t post it or it goes to purgatory.
Larry Schmitt August 27th, 2016 at 20:00
Here ya go, it’s the first English word.
http://translation.babylon-software.com/german/to-english/gast/
Tommie August 27th, 2016 at 20:03
I see alot of deleted comments when people use that word!
Larry Schmitt August 27th, 2016 at 20:06
Every once in a while I forget, and it takes hours for it go get out of jail. I don’t understand what’s wrong with the word. One of the mods tried to explain it, but I forget the reason. Has to do with g—- accounts, I think.
JennaTrull August 27th, 2016 at 19:52
You probably used either the B-word, the C-word, or the TW-word that isn’t twit.
Tommie August 27th, 2016 at 19:54
No the worst word I used was crap, as in people talking crap!
Larry Schmitt August 27th, 2016 at 19:54
That one was okay, so it musta been something else.
Tommie August 27th, 2016 at 19:58
Sorry, not crap but I used the word for number 1 in the bathroom sense that starts with p and rhymes with kiss!
Larry Schmitt August 27th, 2016 at 19:59
I’ve used that one before, and it got through. You just can’t tell what’s okay and what’s not.
JennaTrull August 27th, 2016 at 19:59
Yep. The vulgar word for pee triggers the auto-mod.
whatthe46 August 28th, 2016 at 02:43
use sh!t or chit.
whatthe46 August 28th, 2016 at 02:42
it’s not you. it’s been acting funky apparently. some comments are showing up and aren’t being moderated, it’s just stuck in cyberland. then next thing you know it shows up.
Tommie August 28th, 2016 at 11:38
You are right I woke up this morning and my comment showed up!
amersham1046 August 27th, 2016 at 20:27
Taking a stand by sitting down , interesting concept
bpollen August 27th, 2016 at 22:30
Doing the right thing can have a heavy cost. I hope he fares well. Some don’t.

Good article, bpollen!
bpollen August 29th, 2016 at 02:23
Yeah, I found it moving… and quite sad.
Lyndia August 28th, 2016 at 01:20
I stand BUT I NEVER SING THE SONG or place my hand over my heart.
Just Axin August 28th, 2016 at 06:24
I don’t recall anyone asking you.
Obewon August 28th, 2016 at 06:37
As a Native American I concur 100%. In middle school I refused to say or stand for the pledge. The compromise I had to agree to was to stand, never saying P of A again.
Larry Schmitt August 28th, 2016 at 07:21
The pledge is completely meaningless. The words are always said with the same rhythm. Ask any kid to explain them, and they can’t. It’s like a secular prayer. What is it supposed to prove? If I ran a school, the first thing I would do is abolish the pledge.
fahvel August 28th, 2016 at 02:33
curious – talk about the song representing all that’s wonderful on the surface in the usa but a bunch of mature commenters have their comments edited by a fkn machine which knows sht about freedom. What a putain joke.
fahvel August 28th, 2016 at 02:34
see, I don’t get it. abbreviated vulgarity slides right by the brilliant little moderators digital mind. it’s blsht.
whatthe46 August 28th, 2016 at 02:40
what are you upset about?
DogsRgoodpeople August 28th, 2016 at 06:59
speaking as a 49’rs fan, I hope Kaep’s passing catches up with his spot on politics.
Tommie August 28th, 2016 at 15:22
I am also a 49er fan!
oldfart August 28th, 2016 at 07:14
Americans being Americans…
The cost of standing up or sitting down cuts both ways.
The “perfect union” still has a long way to go.
tyrone August 28th, 2016 at 07:39
