Emails: Manafort waged covert Influence campaign for pro-Putin Ukraine pols

Isn’t there a law against being an unregistered agent for a foreign political entity? Paul Manafort has a lot of explaining to do:

A firm run by Donald Trump’s campaign chairman directly orchestrated a covert Washington lobbying operation on behalf of Ukraine’s ruling political party, attempting to sway American public opinion in favor of the country’s pro-Russian government, emails obtained by The Associated Press show. Paul Manafort and his deputy, Rick Gates, never disclosed their work as foreign agents as required under federal law.

The lobbying included attempts to gain positive press coverage of Ukrainian officials in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Associated Press.

Another goal: undercutting American public sympathy for the imprisoned rival of Ukraine’s then-president. At the time, European and American leaders were pressuring Ukraine to free her.

Gates personally directed the work of two prominent Washington lobbying firms in the matter, the emails show. He worked for Manafort’s political consulting firm at the time.

Manafort and Gates’ activities carry outsized importance, since they have steered Trump’s campaign since April. The pair also played a formative role building out Trump’s campaign operation after pushing out an early rival. Trump shook up his campaign’s organization again this week, but Manafort and Gates retain their titles and much of their influence. The new disclosures about their work come as Trump faces criticism for his friendly overtures to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The New York Times adds several details in this morning’s edition:

The Ukrainian authorities, under pressure to bolster their assertion that once-secret accounting documents show cash payments from a pro-Russian political party earmarked for Donald J. Trump’s campaign chairman, on Thursday released line-item entries, some for millions of dollars.

The revelations also point to an outsize role for a former senior member of the pro-Russian political party, the Party of Regions, in directing money to both Republican and Democratic advisers and lobbyists from the United States as the party tried to burnish its image in Washington.

The former party member, Vitaly A. Kalyuzhny, for a time chairman of the Ukraine Parliament’s International Relations Committee, had signed nine times for receipt of payments designated for the Trump campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, according to Serhiy A. Leshchenko, a member of Parliament who has studied the documents. The ledger covered payments from 2007 to 2012, when Mr. Manafort worked for the party and its leader, Viktor F. Yanukovych, Ukraine’s former president who was deposed.

If you may have been thinking that a certain former game show host now running for president got played, you now have even more reason to believe it to be true. ‘Nuff said.

    Like any of this matters….
Manafort is in bed with Putin, Trump is soliciting donations from foreigners, Lewinsky pushes women around, the campaign won’t release any tax returns…
Nobody seems to care because it’s not on Hillary’s Email server

It’s good that Trump’s comrade resigned but bringing in a full blown racist (Bannon) isn’t much better!

Have you heard the theory the Trump is positioning himself to create a media operation after his epic loss?

Maybe we can borrow some unused bumper stickers from the Trump campaign. A quick alteration is all we need
