Obergefell: Trump a ‘laughable’ ‘disingenuous’ liar

Jim Obergefell was the plaintiff in Obergefell vs. Hodges, the Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage. With reporter Debbie Cenziper, he wrote Love Wins, the heartbreaking story of how he was finally able to marry his long-time partner who was dying of ALS.  The one happy ending, though, was the decision by the court that his marriage was legal everywhere in America. The co-authors joined me Monday night to discuss this, the 2016 presidential race and the tragedy in Orlando. Here’s what he said about the presumptive Republican nominee:

OBERGEFELL: It’s laughable, it’s disingenuous, and it’s an outright lie. Which of the two presumptive nominees has come out and publicly stated “I will nominate Justices to the United States Supreme Court who will overturn marriage equality?” Not Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton has been on the side of the LGBQ community. She is the one who will continue the gains that we have seen as Americans under President Obama. Donald Trump will not be that person. And he continues to equate being Muslim with being a terrorist, with being a hater of American values, with being a hater of the LGBQ community. That has to stop. This is not the Muslim faith vs. the LGBQ community. It is not the Muslim faith against American values. He needs to stop that.
