Obama pushes for smart guns

Posted by | April 29, 2016 15:53 | Filed under: Good News Politics

President Obama is promoting smart gun technology.

The move is intended to allow Mr. Obama to confront firearms violence in the face of fierce opposition to broader gun control measures. But critics of smart gun technology, including some police officials, are expected to fight a proposal that they see as unproven and an unwarranted restriction on the freedom to use firearms.

The initiative was unveiled on the White House website, along with a report from the administration’s law enforcement agencies concluding that the government should do more to spur development of the technologies. To that end, the Defense and Justice Departments will develop criteria for gun manufacturers who want to sell smart guns to federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

Smart guns seem like a great idea, until you realize the criminal element has probably already figured out how to hack them so anyone can use them.

That doesn’t mean smart guns wouldn’t help prevent tragedies to some degree, but it’s not a… um… bulletproof… method to restrict gun usage.

Gun safety measure will save Americans lives – lots of them.

But, of course “criminal elements” (is that code for blacks?) will continue to be violent.

But, things like licensing and registration will help bust them _before_ they kill somebody.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for sensible regulations.
Licensing, registration, a whole slew of ideas are great.
And smart guns are too… I was just mentioning the tech wouldn’t be perfect.

And no, “criminal elements” didn’t mean blacks, it meant people who engage in criminal behavior.
I hadn’t even considered a racial distinction when I was writing it.

I long for the day when my gun is smarter than a Texan politician.

The NRA will go the death to make sure that will never happen…
    as will ALL republicans.
besides there’s already a gun for every man, woman and child in this country now
…But it’s the thought that counts.

And the gun idiots will oppose smart guns.

And smart-guns have a delightful flavor of NRA-hates-me! Savory!

Once it is proven technology, but at present the bio reading ones have trouble picking up bio markers when the hands are dirty, bloody, or sweaty. Something mine always seemed to be in a firefight.
    .
Good idea maybe, but it’s not ready for prime time yet.

Bio-printing guns makes the least amount of sense to me simply because it decreases the likelihood of the gun operating properly. It also takes away from the portability and makes use specific to an individual person…
What happens if you want to lend your gun to a friend, maybe your wife needs it to save your life…now what…???
What happens when you want to sell…more costly bio-printing…

No simple things like mandatory trigger locks, a gun safe, or just some common sense storage habits like separating ammo from weapons would do more than this…
