$5,$10 bills to also change

The $20 bill change to Harriet Tubman is the start of other changes to come, says treasury secretary Jack Lew.

Lew said the final concept designs of new $20, $10 and $5 bills are scheduled to be completed and unveiled by 2020, the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.

Lew did not give a more specific timetable of when the bills would be released into circulation, saying only that he had directed the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to “work as quickly as possible” while making sure to meet security requirements for the bills that are the “first and foremost responsibility.”

The talking point circulating around the right wing fever swamp this morning is that the addition of Harriet Tubman to the $20 bill is just “political correctness”.

Andrew Jackson was added to the $20 bill in 1928, replacing Grover Cleveland. Would that qualify as “political correctness” to these partisan cretins?

And once again, at the risk of showing my cynical side, if the decision had been to replace Andrew Jackson with Ronald Reagan instead of Harriet Tubman, I suspect that most of those ranting about political correctness would be hailing the decision and questioning the patriotism of anyone who disagreed with the choice.

At least right wingers are consistent. They always find some way to denigrate the unique achievements of black people. I have read comments from some prominent conservatives that the selection of Thurgood Marshall to the US Supreme Court was simply “affirmative action”.

The fact that no one of his generation had comparable accomplishments was never mentioned. He was the lead litigator in Brown v Board of Education. The decision in that case, redefined the fundamental interpretation of the 14th amendment. Did any jurist of that time make a comparable contribution to constitutional case law in this country? None that I am aware of.

It is the same old sh*t from the right wing in this country. Still too dense to understand that insulting and demeaning the values of black people in this country is not the best approach to changing the fact that the Democratic party receives 90% of our vote.

I’m surprised there is any public building anywhere in the country that isn’t named for Reagan.

      • Mike April 21st, 2016 at 16:16

Maybe I’m confused but are you saying there are no public buildings named after St Ronnie…???
There are so many these’s a wiki page…state by state…county by county in some instances…

No, it was some republican congressman’s goal even before he died to have something in every state named for him. I said it’s a wonder there’s anything left that hasn’t been named for him.

That’s more like it…the clown was none other than Grover Norquist…the quisling republican idiot.

            • Larry Schmitt April 21st, 2016 at 16:34

He helped Gingrich write the “Contract on America,” and he was involved with Abramoff. For that alone he should be in jail.

              • Mike April 21st, 2016 at 16:41

Anyone named Grover should do 10-15 hard time just for GP….

I continue to underestimate the level of idiocy so many people in our country can descend into. When I first heard they chose Harriet Tubman – I thought nobody who doesn’t put a sheet over their heads prior to burning their weekend cross could be anything but over the top happy with the selection. I mean, Harriet freaking Tubman! One of the most amazing people ever to grace the planet with their presence.

      It’s very depressing :(

And yet, on most sites that allow comments, the only thing some people can come up with is how “ugly” she is. Have they looked at Jackson’s portrait lately? He always reminded me of Richard III, it looks like he’s a hunchback. As if physical looks actually mean anything. They probably want Megyn Kelly. Nice to look at for some people, but no one’s home.

I seen someone claiming they don’t want a woman with a scarf on her head on their money. What the hell does a scarf have to do with anything? I keep trying to try to understand them but they have left the realm of common sense and that is a place I cannot enter without giving up myself.

          • Larry Schmitt April 21st, 2016 at 16:58

Everyone knows if she’s wearing a scarf, that makes her a mooslim. We can’t have a mooslim on our money.

Why not? We have one in the White House lol.

                But he’ll be gone soon.

Uh oh, Anomaly hasn’t gotten to you yet. Jade Helm is meeting next week to set up our plans for the third term. Shhhhhh, don’t tell anyone, just keep it between you, me and the internet lol.

Like that Connie Chung interview with Newt’s mother: You can whisper it to me, just between us.

I always knew it must of been a classy broad who gave birth to newt.

          • arc99 April 21st, 2016 at 17:18

I wasn’t all that happy with slave owners on our money. The scarf-haters will have to adjust, just like I did.

            • Suzanne McFly April 21st, 2016 at 17:23

I have to give that an amen.

            • epazote April 21st, 2016 at 18:31

We’ve never been happy with the genocidal Jackson on USA currency. There was a time when $20 bills were not treated as legitimate currency/legal tender on reservations.

    • Jimmy Fleck April 21st, 2016 at 18:44

The reaction I have seen is that liberals must not realize Tubman was a religious gun toting Republican who will be replacing one of the founders of the Democratic party and former slave owner.

      • arc99 April 22nd, 2016 at 00:54

I have seen a few of those myself. Those right wing partisans appear oblivious to the irony that you have to go back decades if not more than a century to find a time when the GOP was a friend to black Americans.

i wonder if bush and cheney know that people want to change their $20 bill ?

  5. edsfarm April 22nd, 2016 at 22:39

I have an idea. Let’s make it a one political system. The Repubi-Crates. The Crates can worry about what face is on the currency, transgender bathrooms. the Washington Redskins, micro-aggression, income inequality, LGBT, BLM, affirmative action, (making sure everyone get’s a trophy or a job whether they deserve it or not), open borders, global warming or cooling, what ever works at the time, (drought or to much rain), destroying religion, abortion, rewarding laziness with entitlements and the Repuli side that’s concerned with jobs, securing our border and national security.
