A 37 year old law and only now have we lowered the bar for voting. sad.

Yea, and why would a republican think that he could change a law at the last minute and no one would notice? Do they really think that all voters are so stupid that they would not notice? Their voter suppression tactics are getting more and more outrageous and desperate.

Ohio is probably the worst state for suppression efforts. The only way PO was elected twice in that state was because they had a Democratic Governor both times, thank God. He did as much as humanly possible to stop the state and local government in each county who was trying to stop early voting, Sunday voting and so on.
I fear for what is going to happen this time around. They have already been back to the same old tricks under Kasich. He benefits.

True and it has been in force in Ohio and lots of other states for a very long time, have to wonder about the other states, if any of them will be trying the same thing? Of course it will only be the state with republicans in charge.

Republicans are like vampires, once you invite them in, you can never get rid of them LOL.

37 years, legal voting age is 18 with a 6 month window….what next lowering the age to 16 Sorry Candide, I see nothing wrong with having and enforcing a legal age to vote. What gets me is bernie never gave a damn until now, it is a political ploy from him.

            • CandideThirtythree March 12th, 2016 at 15:27

Sorry but you are wrong, the article clearly says that 17 year olds have been able to vote in primaries since 1981.

Bernie made sure that 17 year olds who would turn 18 by election day could vote in his state years ago … he is the senator from Vermont… He has always cared about the rights of Americans.

Why would you all of a sudden want to keep Americans from voting? What purpose could it possibly serve to discourage young people from voting? Who would gain by that?

It is republicans who are doing all the voter suppression, you don’t agree with republicans do you?

This could be the ultimate wild card in the Ohio election

  3. Mike March 11th, 2016 at 22:04

Look at that…ol Bernie made it possible to vote for some in a state where the GOP has been trying to make it impossible…and he’s not even president yet…!!!

Interesting, Very Interesting. This is a concept that I had never thought or heard of. I am glad about the way it worked out because, how can you tell someone they have to wait to vote but they can’t participate in selecting the candidate that they will be able to vote for ?

How many 17 year olds turn 18 between the primary and the general election? I can’t imagine that there are enough to swing the vote in Ohio.

    • Glen March 12th, 2016 at 00:17

Well, it’s almost 8 months between primary and election, so presumably almost two thirds of them.

Now, if we suppose that those in the 18-24 age group are all equally likely to show up to polls, and Michigan and Ohio are similar in behaviour on this front, then assuming the 17 year olds would vote similarly to the rest of the age group, then based on exit polls from Michigan…

18-24 made up 11% of voters, which would increase to a little over 12%. About 85% of Michigan 18-24 year old Democratic primary voters voted for Sanders. So let’s simplify and assume the extra 1% goes to Sanders.

Ohio has 143 delegates, so that’s 1-2 extra delegates for Sanders assuming perfectly distributed delegate counts.

But Ohio doesn’t work purely by final total. It’s a district-by-district count for 93 of the delegates, plus 50 for total result. So a change of 1% could conceivably increase Sanders’ delegate count by as much as 17 or as little as 1, depending on how many districts see Sanders’ vote increase enough to change a delegate position.

I bow to your electoral math.

I do know that young people are famously unreliable voters but maybe this voting opportunity will motivate them to come out.

        • Glen March 12th, 2016 at 02:41

Strange as it may seem, 18 year olds are an exception to that rule, and in places where 17 year olds have been given the ability to vote in primaries, they’ve actually turned out more than even those in their 40s.

The vote is one of the few things that every citizen should take seriously.
No one should be denied the right to exercise it.
This country is F**ked without it.
I don’t care who those kids will vote for… just that they vote.

. Never considered this before, but it does make sense.

  8. Suzanne McFly March 12th, 2016 at 09:09

This is the exact thing we need to do, the republicans restrict voting, we need to expand it. If more people vote, less republicans win.
