Miss Puerto Rico Suspended After Anti-Muslim Rant

Posted by | December 20, 2015 22:00 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Religion

Too bad beauty doesn’t always equal brains.

Miss Puerto Rico Destiny Velez has been suspended indefinitely after she fired off a series of vicious anti-Muslim tweets in response to the “We Are All Muslim” protests led by director Michael Moore, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

The 20-year-old Velez directed her angry tweets at the film director — who created a buzz last week when he held up a sign reading “We Are All Muslim” outside of the Trump Tower and shared an open letter online claiming that, unlike Trump, “we are not a country of angry white guys.”

In her tweets, Velez said, “Muslims use our constitution to terrorize USA & plant gas stations,” before later adding that Muslims “terrorize this country & many others.”

Velez’s remarks prompted the Miss Puerto Rico Organization to issue a statement calling her comments a poor representation of “the integrity and esteem of our program.”

the classic ‘Beauty and the Cowardly Lyin’ Klub’ story?

  2. labman57 December 20th, 2015 at 23:22

She should switch to Trump’s Miss USA pageant.

The management of that program would likely applaud her for her Islamophobic remarks. Of course, she would also be dissed for being Latina — never mind.

What does it mean to say “We are all Muslim”? Are we all Jewish too? Are we all Catholic? Are we all Agnostic? Are we all Atheist? Why are Muslims considered as a special category?

    • granpa.usthai December 21st, 2015 at 00:36

      e. pluribus unum.

(what you do to one of US, you do to all)

Because they are being persecuted by vicious fascist right-wing thugs, much as the Jews were in Germany in the 1930s.

There’s a political party in the United States whose leading candidate for the nomination wants to stigmatize them, suspend their rights, register them, and demonize them.

People like you, who look the other way, who support the fascist party, who don’t see the need to have solidarity with persecuted minorities, you are part of the problem.

We defeated your ilk in 1865 and 1945, we will defeat you again.

      • Robert M. Snyder December 21st, 2015 at 01:38

You are so naïve. Go and live in Saudi Arabia for a year. Then come home and tell me how backward the Republicans are. I realize that there are a billion Muslims in the world, and they don’t all think alike. But when you look at what many Muslims profess to believe, you see that they make Jerry Falwell look like a liberal.

I am not advocating religious discrimination, but where is the line between religion and secular values? Liberals get all bent out of shape because some Christian refuses to bake a cake, yet you defend a religion that in many Arab countries is used to justify putting gays to death.

No, we are not all Muslims. We do not all believe in punishing women who show their ankles in public, or prohibiting women from working in jobs where they come in contact with men. Too many people in the West fought too many battles for equal rights for us to ever go back to this seventh-century mentality called Islam.

Nobody is born Muslim. People are born into Muslim families, but it’s not part of someone’s DNA. Islam is a voluntary set of beliefs, just like Christianity, liberalism, and conservatism. If you can criticize conservatism, then I can criticize Islam. They are voluntary sets of belief.

I do not believe in discriminating against people based upon their beliefs. If I am providing a service to the public, I will treat everyone the same. But I am not required to agree with other people’s beliefs.

I will say “We are all Muslims” the day that you say “We are all conservatives”.

and the pat liarsons of this country? and the carlie liars of this country? the tRump liars of this country? you voluntarily choose to believe that a baby was born and dissected while still alive. you choose to believe that all immigrants of mexican decent, are rapist and murderers. you choose to believe that if a person with brown skin commits a murder then all persons of color are responsible. but, let a mcveigh, roof, manson, ice man, and school shooting murderers, commit crimes of disgust, when no one ever did a damn thing to them, (and most profess themselves to be “christians.”) you will call them the lone wolf. the murderers of health care clinics. a lone wolf. nevermind the fact that they were given information that was blatantly false. they are being encouraged by the right to commit acts of violence. that being said, go back to where the fk you came from.

What the hell are you doing? If you think that what is done here is somehow obviated by what happens in Saudi Arabia, then people should be able to rob your house because credit-default swaps. They should be able to kick your ass because people have been murdered in Uganda. Rape your wife because they rape babies in India.

Talk about the specious reasoning. Mama shoulda told you that it doesn’t matter what those other kids do… we ain’t talking about those other kids.

        • MyDogsAreSmarterThanYou December 21st, 2015 at 06:11

But I am not required to agree with other people’s beliefs.

Nobody’s asking you to do that. You’re obviously taking Moore’s statement way too literally.

    • whatthe46 December 21st, 2015 at 01:17

when was there a “war on christians?” please do tell. i mean, i know there has always been a war on anyone who weren’t “christian” so, why are “christians” considered to be so damn special?

      • Robert M. Snyder December 21st, 2015 at 01:47

There is certainly persecution of Christians (and Jews, and Sunni Muslims, and Shi’ite Muslims, etc). Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity concocted a phony “War on Christmas” in order to promote a victim mentality and boost their own ratings.

        • whatthe46 December 21st, 2015 at 01:51

“There is certainly persecution of Christians…” time and date please?

          • Robert M. Snyder December 21st, 2015 at 01:56

            Well, let’s start with Wikipedia:

Christians have faced increasing levels of persecution in the Muslim world. Muslim nations in which Christian populations have suffered acute discrimination, persecution and in some cases death include; Iraq, Iran, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Palestinian Territories, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Libya, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, Qatar, Uzbekistan, Nigeria, Tunisia, Jordan, Oman, Algeria, Mali, Kuwait, Morocco, Indonesia, Malaysia, Niger, Tanzania, Kazakhstan, Tadjikistan, Turkmenistan, Mauritania, Eritrea, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Brunei, Tanzania, Maldives, Kenya, Chad and United Arab Emirates.

Furthermore, any Muslim person – including any person born to a Muslim family or having become Muslim at a given point in life – who converts to Christianity is considered to have performed apostasy. Apostasy, the conscious abandonment of Islam by a Muslim in word or through deed, including also conversion to Christianity, is punishable as a crime under the application of the Sharia. There are, however, cases in which a Muslim will adopt the Christian faith, secretly without declaring his/her apostasy. As a result, they are practising Christians, but legally Muslims, and would face the death penalty. Meriam Ibrahim, a Sudanese woman, was sentenced to death for apostasy in 2014, because the government of Sudan classified her as a Muslim, while she was raised Christian.

and you don’t see the irony in that the so-called “christians” in this country, want to implement “sharia” law here? there are those that don’t accept “christianity” and were murdered and burned at the stake. so-called “christians” in this country are calling for the death of anyone who doesn’t believe in their “god.” rwnj’s running for the presidency are calling for the hanging and murder of anyone who are not like them. sounds familiar? an ill informed pos murdered 3 people in the name of “god” at PP. because of brain washing b.s. and rwnj rhetoric. you’re so bothered by someone who is muslim, but, you’re not bothered by someone who call themselves “christians” and murders our citizens based on their warped beliefs? whom, by the way are white males by a vast majority. how many muslims murdered babies in their schools in this country? shouldn’t it be fair that i should be afraid of seeing a white guy driving a moving van? roof, murdered 9 people in their own house of worship, can you provide evidence that a muslim went into a house of worship in this country and murdered 1 soul? i won’t hold my breath.

              • Robert M. Snyder December 21st, 2015 at 02:32

You have an active imagination. I just about popped a vein telling off a priest one day. I detest theology and theocrats.

                • whatthe46 December 21st, 2015 at 02:36

so what do you have against muslims?

                  • Robert M. Snyder December 21st, 2015 at 03:16

I just told you that I told off a priest, and you ask me what I have against Muslims? Wow.
My problem is with Islam, and Judaism, and Christianity. Moore said we are all Muslims. No. Count me out.

                    • MyDogsAreSmarterThanYou December 21st, 2015 at 06:09

You know, there’s a saying that describes your attitude perfectly. You may not support their belief system, but you should support their right to it. Otherwise, don’t come crying to me when you’re marginalized for your beliefs, or lack thereof.

LMAO, he broke our Wikipedia on you. That is hilarious, he probably wrote half that dribble on Wiki himself.

    • bpollen December 21st, 2015 at 02:10

Are statements of solidarity that confusing to you? Seriously?

Were you confused about “Je suis Charlie” or Angela Merkel’s “We are crying with you” in reference to the recent attacks on Paris or David Cameron saying “We stand with France” or the book “Dear Malala, We Stand With You” or the “We Stand with Mizzou” rally at the U of Missouri or “We Stand with Blue” (some sort of cop groupies) or the minute of silence after the Olympic massacre of Jews at the 1972 Summer Olympics?

      • Gindy51 December 21st, 2015 at 06:39

An even older reference to solidarity: http://millercenter.org/president/speeches/speech-3376

        • bpollen December 21st, 2015 at 15:58

I like that reference. Kennedy was trying to say something along the lines of “I, too, belong to Berlin.” What he actually said was more like “I am a jelly donut.”
