NY Times: The Price Of Fear

Posted by | November 21, 2015 13:22 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Opinion Politics

If we continue to overreact to terrorism, we lose our way.

History is replete with examples of the power of fear and ignorance, to which even the great can fall prey. Franklin Roosevelt calmed a nation in bleakest days of the Depression, but he also signed the executive order imprisoning tens of thousands of American citizens for the crime of Japanese ancestry.

In our time, disastrous things have been done in the name of safety: the invasion of Iraq, spawned by delusion and lies; the creation of an offshore fortress, sequestered from the Constitution, to lock up those perceived as threats, no matter the cost and injustice; an ever-expanding surveillance apparatus, to spy on the people, no matter the futility…

As for the members of the House, Democratic and Republican, who voted to effectively shut down the Syrian and Iraqi refugee program, and the governors who would somehow block Syrians from their borders — Americans should hope it’s just fearful ignorance that clouds their vision, and that in time it clears.

They didn’t vote out of fear of refugees, they voted out of fear of losing their jobs due to the IDIOTS back in their states who are scared out of their minds by the fucking media hype surrounding this fucking mess. One GOP already admitted such and if he did many others have done so as well.

Stop being afraid. Are you afraid when you cross the street because a car could hit you? There’s more of a chance of that happening than being slaughtered in a terrorist attack in the U.S.

i’m more afraid of getting shot in a church, mall or school than getting shot by a foreign terrorist.

Last election cycle it was Obama and Ebola that was gonna get everyone, and your children…(according to republicans)..
Of course it never happened, but it still worked for getting Republicans elected..

It shows that fear and lies can work for the right wing mindset when it comes to elections.
    .
No matter how far fetched and baseless the lies are…
As long as the fear is palpable.

it didn’t work because Obama stood up to the ever fearful cons and that’s what he’s doing now and after the big freak out when things have settled down some we can get back to work.
