Sanders Introduces Bill To Lift Federal Marijuana Ban

Posted by | November 4, 2015 20:00 | Filed under: Good News Politics

Bernie Sanders wants the ban on marijuana lifted and is taking action.

Sanders introduced a bill Wednesday to end the federal prohibition on marijuana, the first such bill to ever be introduced in the Senate, according to marijuana legalization advocates.

Sanders went farther than any other presidential candidate last week on the question of ending the drug war when he called for lifting the federal ban on marijuana, and he followed up this week by introducing a bill in the Senate to remove marijuana from the federal government’s list of Schedule I drugs, which includes other illegal substances such as heroin and LSD.

“It is absurd that it is compared to, or treated, the same way as heroin is,” Sanderstold The Daily Beast Tuesday.

Last week, Sanders told an audience of college students that ending marijuana prohibition was essential to ending racial disparities in the criminal justice system.

When asked for comment, former House Speaker John Boehner was quoted as saying “Hunh? Whuzza?”

    • maggie November 4th, 2015 at 20:32

yeah he should probably smoke a few…might help him get off big tobacco….

      • Hirightnow November 4th, 2015 at 20:55

I will decline from agreeing with your assessment of the situation, whilst at the same time declining to rebut it…
I mean, look at what happened with a drunk at the helm; you want to put a stoner there?
“The American people want ANSWERS,Mr. Speaker! What say you?”
-“All in favor of Doritos Spicy BBQ say ‘Aye’.”
Not sure that would be such a bad thing…

        • maggie November 4th, 2015 at 21:30

was really referring to Boehner…the recently former speaker who had a life long big tobacco habit…..;)

This is both good and bad, good because weed never should have been listed as a schedule 1 drug, it has medicinal qualities and this has been proven multiple times. But it is bad because Americans seem too stupid to support something that makes perfect sense.

    • Jack E Raynbeau November 4th, 2015 at 23:43

Americans continue to surprise me every day. I think they’re tired of the scare tactics.

      • Suzanne McFly November 5th, 2015 at 06:05

Yeah but it takes almost a century of scare tactics before we finally wise up.

While this bill will likely not see the light of day, there’s certainly no reason
why cannabis couldn’t be take off schedule one.

      • rg9rts November 5th, 2015 at 03:50

Wait for the conazi reaction to Ireland’s decision to decriminalize

But the prisons will almost empty and profits can’t be made off empty prisons.

Why didn’t he do this sooner, I say it is a stunt.

    • Um Cara November 4th, 2015 at 21:56

Hopefully Hillary will throw her support behind this as well. It took her a long time to get over her anti gay bigotry, time for her to take an anti caging her fellow citizens for cannabis stance. And I don’t care if either or both do the right thing for the wrong reason, as long as they DO the right thing. She can be just as bigoted about same sex marriage as she always has been, so long as she continues her recent support of same sex marriage, even if said support looks suspiciously political. Same with cannabis, as long as they stop supporting the caging of Cannabis users and entrepreneurs, who cares if their stance is sincere.

      • tracey marie November 4th, 2015 at 22:02

oh please, she was never anti gay. stop being so stupid

        • Um Cara November 4th, 2015 at 22:41

I’m pretty sure you’re support of same sex marriage started MANY years before her’s. Yes? Again, I REALLY don’t care that her very recent turnaround on the issue was likely just political rather than a change of heart. Nor do I care whether Bernie’s legislation was driven by political reasons rather than a burning desire to stop caging people I don’t think deserve it. Glad they are both doing good stuff, that’s what’s important.

    • Budda November 4th, 2015 at 23:27

Hell, a lot of politicians should have cone it sooner.

      • Jack E Raynbeau November 4th, 2015 at 23:45

        Coneheads.

      • tracey marie November 5th, 2015 at 11:07

Agree, he waited till now and he has made it one of priorities because he is running .

    • Jack E Raynbeau November 4th, 2015 at 23:45

If he did it sooner he would not have a huge audience. He knows what he’s doing.

      • tracey marie November 5th, 2015 at 11:06

Nonsense, he is playing politics and you know it.

        • Jack E Raynbeau November 5th, 2015 at 12:17

          That’s what I said.

          • tracey marie November 5th, 2015 at 13:43

            Damnit, sorry about that.

    • Kick Frenzy November 5th, 2015 at 01:16

He did co-sponsor a bill to re-schedule marijuana to Schedule 2, for the purpose of legalizing medical marijuana.
      That was in 2001.

      Also, from “On The Issues”:
I would vote for recreational marijuana, to reduce jailings. (Oct 2015)
      – War on drugs is a failed policy; treatment over punishment. (Sep 2015)
      – Decriminalize marijuana and study recreational legalization. (Sep 2015)
      – Voted NO on military border patrols to battle drugs & terrorism. (Sep 2001)
      – Voted NO on subjecting federal employees to random drug tests. (Sep 1998)
      – Legalize medical marijuana. (Jul 2001)
      – Exclude industrial hemp from definition of marijuana. (Aug 2012)
      – Exempt industrial hemp from marijuana laws. (Mar 2013)

      http://www.ontheissues.org/Bernie_Sanders.htm

So, no… I do not believe this is a stunt.

      • tracey marie November 5th, 2015 at 11:04

Still say it is a stunt, he has had14 years to bring this issue up again.

        • Kick Frenzy November 7th, 2015 at 01:56

I don’t believe Bernie thinks in terms of “stunts”.
You can think what you want and we can disagree, but I don’t think he made this move purely for political points.
I believe he truly believes in this legislation.

Part of that proof is that he presented while in the middle of a presidential run.
That wouldn’t be a betting man’s favorite move.

    Feel the Bern (one)!

  6. Jack E Raynbeau November 4th, 2015 at 23:41

Sanders is batshit crazy. He would make a great President.

Certainly better than Ben “the pyramids are grain silos” Carson

    • robert November 5th, 2015 at 21:38

      crazy good

      I’ll take it !

  7. Tommie November 5th, 2015 at 00:32

Might as well, enough people smoke anyway and more Blacks and others will not be in jail for something that grows naturally in the ground anyway! Prisons will not be overcrowded and maybe we can put REAL criminals behind bares, like racist and crooked cops!

    • Dwendt44 November 5th, 2015 at 12:11

Cannabis grew wild on most parts of this country for many many years, it was a strategic material during the world wars. It took wide spread and expensive eradication efforts to get ride of this ‘weed’.

  8. oldfart November 5th, 2015 at 01:42

For the love of god man…what are you thinking ? Don’t get it passed until AFTER you get into office…friggin stoners will forget to come out and vote for you.

  9. rg9rts November 5th, 2015 at 03:47

Like repeal of ACA it ill never fly but looks good on the ole resume

  10. Gindy51 November 5th, 2015 at 06:56

Maybe we can be smarter than Ireland and legalize all of it, tax the hell out of it to fund recovery programs, and empty the fucking prisons!

  11. Buford2k11 November 5th, 2015 at 08:41

This could end quit a bit of the corruption surrounding the war on drugs…the DEA, the Private Prison Cabal, Immigration, and some judges, have been turned from the light, and have embraced the darkness of corrupt policies…Civil Forfeiture laws, have sustained the corruption…the DEA, and local police have been known to split the take…the war on drugs has been a massive failure…except for those who benefit from the corruption….these folks will fight it to the end…
