‘Draft Biden’ Is Pulling At The Heartstrings In All The Wrong Ways With Their New Video

Needless to say, Vice President Joe Biden would make a great addition to the Democratic presidential field of candidates vying for the White House in 2016. He brings experience, knowledge of a presidential administration, decades of policy know-how, and a charm that is unmatched. Sure, he sometimes says the wrong thing at the wrong time, but he owns it and the original intention of his point always gets across.

That being said, the choice to run for the highest held office in the land is that of the person who intends on running. It is a monumental choice as it requires an ‘all-in’ attitude by not just the candidate, but also their family.

However, there now seems to be a group of people who seem to desperately want Biden to run for president. “Desperately” being the operative word. This group of people put together their own “Draft Biden” campaign to try and persuade the vice president to jump into the 2016 race.

Why say desperately? Because in the latest video put out by “Draft Biden” they seem to pull at our heartstrings to get everyone to agree that Biden should run. However, they are pulling at our heartstrings in all the wrong ways. Ways, in fact, that almost seem exploitative and even tasteless, as David Axelrod was quick to point out:

It makes you wonder if Biden actually did approve of this video, where in the description it reads:

“This is the first television ad released by the Draft Biden 2016 Super-PAC, asking Joe Biden to run for President in 2016. The ad highlights how Joe has overcome personal tragedies and his vision for the future in his own words: “We are on the cusp of some of the most astonishing breakthroughs in the history of mankind – scientific, technological, socially. It will be up to you in this changing world to translate those unprecedented capabilities into a greater measure of happiness and meaning, not just for yourself but for the world around you.”

Joe, run. Our country needs you.”

The video basically uses the death of his family members as reason enough to have him run for office in a sort of  ‘Joe deserves this for all he’s been through’ kind of way. Which I can hardly see as the intention Biden would try to be getting across. He’s accomplished in regards to the decades he’s put in as a public servant — that’s why he should run for the White House. Not because he’s had so much family tragedy.

With the field of Democratic candidates being so small, Biden would likely make a tremendous addition to any debate stage. However, let’s not resort to tasteless campaigns to get him there. It leaves many with a sour taste in their mouth instead of the urge to get him to run as they would prefer.

If Biden’s going to run, he’ll let us all know in his own way at the time that is right for him. No need to ‘draft’ him. That just seems desperate.
