John Parker is a military veteran and student at Umpqua Community College (UCC). He was on the campus Thursday when Christopher Harper Mercer began his murderous rampage that left ten dead and injured seven more. Parker was also carrying a handgun.

But Parker didn’t get involved or try to attack the shooter for a very simple reason: He knew police SWAT team members wouldn’t be able to tell him from the shooter if he was openly displaying a handgun….READ MORE at LiberalAmerica

Yup, unless you got a easy clean shot, you’re likely to cause more problems and might get yourself killed. The more guns will solve the problem solution, is an outright lie that is designed to sell more guns.

And SWAT will say But But he had a gun..so much for the NRA theory of self defense

Same thing when gabby was shot and the little girl was murdered, 2 guys with a gun said they would have made the situation worse.

Precisely why the “good guy with a gun” theory is such bs. It’s dangerous too because someday soon (based on the frequency of killings) a “good guy” is going to get blown away along with a mass killer.

Or the “good guy” will shoot some innocents in the act himself.

I seem to remember something like that happening in Las Vegas.

First off, Good Job Mr Parker for keeping a level head on your shoulders while hell was breaking loose.
Second it sounds like you made a fast and good assessment of the situation and applied that to your decision making.
Third thanks for your service, and your situation awareness.

I am duplicating my post from the other larger thread on this topic.

I think it is important to point out that yet another right wing myth bites the dust. The campus by law cannot be a gun free zone.

The court decision referenced in the story below was issued in 2011.

    http://www.oregonlive.com/educ

The Oregon University System will not appeal a court ruling that declared its gun ban on its seven campuses exceeds its authority and is invalid.

They must have bought stock in some gun manufacturers. More guns, more deaths, more fear, more gun sales, on and on it goes.

that was such smart thinking in a situation where the levels of adrenaline are extremely high. why can’t police officer act with such a level of conscious when it comes to unarmed citizens?

  7. Tim Coolio October 2nd, 2015 at 22:06

Yeah I can understand what he did, if I was there with a gun, why would I want to take a chance at injecting myself into that mess and maybe throwing my life away, NOT WORTH IT!

  8. tracey marie October 2nd, 2015 at 22:34

More guns do not equal less death, that is a fact

Studies have said that, during the first Gulf War (under Bush I) the friendly fire rate was up to 24%. These are trained military personnel, knowing in advance that they are going into possible combat situations, and more than 1 in 5 is getting shot by his/her own forces. I doubt that heavily armed yahoos with visions of Rambo dancing in their head would be a good option when you are standing in the middle of their circular firing squad.

He was actually not allowed to by security and staff and police were already there. At least that’s what he said in his first interview, right after the shooting. He was in another building across campus. There was no mention of the possibility of him being confused for an attacker as a reason why he didnt respond. It makes perfect sense, but it wasn’t what was said initially.

I’ll have to look at some later interviews and see how this story evolved the way it did.

Had he been allowed to, perhaps he could have saved some lives and been yet another hero in this horrific tragedy. My hat is off to him for even being to willing to try. Well, per the interview I saw anyway.
