Pope Francis will allow priests to forgive women who’ve had abortions

…if women “with contrite heart, seek forgiveness for it” during the Holy Year of Mercy, beginning Dec. 8. “I am well aware of the pressure that has led [women] to this decision,” the pope wrote. “I know that it is an existential and moral ordeal.” Abortion is considered a grave sin by the Catholic Church, and the consequence is usually excommunication. Only senior church officials were previously allowed to provide absolution.

    Regardless of my personal feelings on abortion, I believe that no sin is unforgivable. I also believe that any ordained man of the cloth, regardless of his rank, should be able to absolve any sin. A regretful heart shouldn’t have to petition the Vatican, for forgiveness.

    So how does this work? Did God specifically demand the pope to change the law? Prior to today, if I went to a priest and asked forgiveness for an abortion, would he tell me to go f*ck myself? Why does the church think pedophilia and war is okay, but an abortion warrants excommunication?
