Woman Denied Service At Store Because Of Hijab

Posted by | August 17, 2015 15:30 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Religion

Bigotry is often based on ignorance.

Nadia Kamal claims the store Advance America Cash Advance, a payday lender, recently denied her service because of her hijab. When the store asked her to remove the garb, Kamal refused, for both religious and cultural reasons.

“The lady she told them just take it off a little bit and put it back,” Fatah Kamal, Nadia’s husband, told MyFoxPhilly. “She said I can’t, ‘I’m in a public place I cannot do that.'”

As Nadia’s husband further explained to the station, “They should show not their hair or like their beauty to someone beside their very close family.”

Although the store had a sign up telling customers that no sunglasses or hats could be worn inside, there was no mention of hijabs. When MyFoxPhilly contacted Advance America Cash Advance, an employee at the store said that the religious garb raised safety concerns.

    Expect a lawsuit…
If your in business don’t you usually want customers…??? This will cost them and prove to be foolhardy

    • whatthe46 August 17th, 2015 at 17:19

      gofundme in 3…2…1

  2. Larry Schmitt August 17th, 2015 at 16:55

How would they treat a nun with the old fashioned habit?

    • Jimmy Fleck August 17th, 2015 at 17:18

Since a nun takes a vow of poverty I don’t think they would be using a pay check advance business. However, if the store policy is no hats or sunglasses then I would expect a nun to remove her habit if she were to enter the store.

      • whatthe46 August 17th, 2015 at 17:19

        what?

      • Larry Schmitt August 17th, 2015 at 17:22

The question would apply for any business. I knew someone would try to apply it strictly to payday lenders. My point in asking the question is to point out the hypocrisy in requiring a Muslim to remove her hijab, but not a Christian to remove her headgear.

        • Jimmy Fleck August 17th, 2015 at 17:28

And i said that I would expect a nun to remove her habit if the store policy is no hats. What is confusing about that?

          • whatthe46 August 17th, 2015 at 17:34

no you wouldn’t just like they wouldn’t cause “christian.”

            • Jimmy Fleck August 17th, 2015 at 17:44

Well thanks for clearing me up on what I think.

              • Larry Schmitt August 17th, 2015 at 18:04

Let’s put it this way. If you actually expect that to happen, your expectations are not based on actual fact or reality.

              • whatthe46 August 17th, 2015 at 19:07

                you’re welcome.

          • Larry Schmitt August 17th, 2015 at 17:37

But no business owner would ever make a request like that of a nun. They don’t think twice making requests like that of Muslims.

            • CandideThirtythree August 17th, 2015 at 21:18

well a nun is an employee of a church so wouldn’t that be like a uniform, like the UPS man with his little brown shorts? LOL!

But seriously, nuns have been wearing regular clothes since the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s so the only time you will see someone wearing a nun’s habit is at a Halloween party.

      • Gindy51 August 17th, 2015 at 17:37

Well they DON’T. Not in a bank, not in a store, no where do they remove their habits. My sister is a nun, the old fashioned kind, Carmelite, who wears the full gear all nuns used to wear. NEVER in her life has she had anyone ask her to remove her habit, EVER. Not even for a drivers’ license does she have to remove it. She shows less skin than the lady in question. I have never heard of any nun any where asked to remove her habit except under duress and torture.

        • Larry Schmitt August 17th, 2015 at 17:38

          So your sister’s a sister?

    • thinkingwomanmillstone August 17th, 2015 at 17:35

With reverence and awe…she might have a ruler on her. They would clearly have never asked her to remove her coif and veil.

      • Dwendt44 August 17th, 2015 at 21:11

That ‘ruler’ could be considered a weapon since I’ve heard it used to inflict a good deal of damage.

  3. oldsurferFLA August 17th, 2015 at 18:52

They did her a favor. Now they can’t rip her off

    • whatthe46 August 17th, 2015 at 19:04

instead of her owing them, i hope they have to owe her.

    • Larry Schmitt August 17th, 2015 at 19:23

The problem with those payday and title lenders is, once you borrow from them, what will change in your situation between now and next payday, that won’t force you to borrow from them again? Those places, and Rentacenters should all be shut down. They’re nothing but clip joints.

      • Suzanne McFly August 17th, 2015 at 19:48

Right, these “businesses” are legal thieves. I can not believe they have a policy for removing a hijab before you enter their store. They don’t care if you are naked, as long as you have the required paperwork so they can feed off your desperation they couldn’t care less what you have on. I think this employee will be looking for new employment.

        • Larry Schmitt August 17th, 2015 at 19:56

I work at a bank, and they have more reason to be security conscious than these places. We have never asked anyone to remove their hats or other headgear. That policy sounds bogus to me.

          • whatthe46 August 17th, 2015 at 20:01

the only reason i would have a problem with it is if, it were the entire gear from head to toe. i have seen where they will have their entire faces covered with it, including wearing big dark sunglasses. now to me, anyone, when you’re not a muslim, could go into those types of places pretending to be a female muslim just to rob them. but that’s not the case here.

        • whatthe46 August 17th, 2015 at 19:57

“…an employee at the store said that the religious garb raised safety concerns.” i don’t think it’s a policy, i think it was this employee who has the bias. at least i want to believe that.

        • CandideThirtythree August 17th, 2015 at 21:05

Those places get robbed often because they deal in large amounts of cash so they need to be able to go back to the surveillance cameras to identify the robbers.

Working there is almost as dangerous as working at a convenience store.

      • whatthe46 August 17th, 2015 at 19:56

speaking of rent-a-centers, i remember a case where a woman purchased an x-box (which was about 200+ bucks right?) and she went to rent-a-center to get one. well, she ended up paying over $900 dollars. fk’n idiot.

        • Larry Schmitt August 17th, 2015 at 19:58

That’s an everyday occurrence at those places. People only look at the weekly or monthly payment, not the total cost. The same “logic” that convinces people to get a 7 year loan on a car they won’t have half that long. It’s all about the payment.

          • Dwendt44 August 17th, 2015 at 21:09

“$22 a week!” ends up being over $90 a month. If they could scratch up $90 a week, you”d think they could buy that refrigerator or TV at most electronics or Home Depot, or get a credit card of some sort.

  4. whatthe46 August 17th, 2015 at 19:06

“…an employee at the store said that the religious garb raised safety concerns.” yeah, ’cause good ‘ol “christians” have never harmed a soul in their lives.

    • CandideThirtythree August 17th, 2015 at 21:03

I am pretty sure it is for the surveillance cameras that go along with the height measurements marked on the inside of the door.

      • whatthe46 August 17th, 2015 at 21:08

how so? i guess i’m understanding your post.

        • CandideThirtythree August 17th, 2015 at 21:36

they need a clear picture of people who come into the store so that if one of them decides to rob the place, the store manager will have a good photo to give to the cops. That is why they do not allow hats or glasses, everyone who walks in is having their picture taken whether they know it or not.

          • whatthe46 August 17th, 2015 at 22:35

how many feet do you think will add to a persons height? 2, 3, more? sun glasses, i can see (no pun intended) because it can cause an obstruction of a better part of the face, but, a hat, a habit, or hijab? not.

            • CandideThirtythree August 17th, 2015 at 23:15

How can they see what color hair they have? You need a good picture and an accurate description of a perp.

  5. atunionbob August 17th, 2015 at 20:04

Having been a business manager, I had a sign that said NO Ski masks, No Hats, No face covering allowed. That included Nuns, kids, Hijabs, or any sun glasses. Those that did not follow that rule got shown the door. I did not want to get robbed.

    • whatthe46 August 17th, 2015 at 20:07

how many nuns have you seen in your life time that covered their faces?

      • maggie August 17th, 2015 at 20:35

        they cover their hair

      • CandideThirtythree August 17th, 2015 at 21:00

I went to Catholic school back in the day when the only part of a nun that was visible was her face and her hands. Then 40 years later when I taught at the exact same catholic school, the nuns wore pants and Polo shirts and had butt ugly poodle haircuts. I haven’t seen a nun in a habit and wimple in decades.

        • whatthe46 August 17th, 2015 at 21:08

i see them all the time here. black, white and hispanic/mexican nuns. they wear the entire outfit. some wear just the habit, with your regular “dress wear.”

          • CandideThirtythree August 17th, 2015 at 22:08

yea, they are probably different in different parts of the country or depending on which order they belong to.

            • whatthe46 August 17th, 2015 at 23:04

i only know one catholic order. besides, if you don’t have respect for a nuns dress wear, then i’m not surprised that you wouldn’t have respect for someone who also practices her religion by wearing just a hijab. just sayin’.

              • CandideThirtythree August 17th, 2015 at 23:11

What? I was just joking about the UPS guy and his tiny shorts besides I grew up in Catholic school and taught at catholic school, everybody jokes about it…even the nuns sometimes.

    • maggie August 17th, 2015 at 20:36

I think as long as you apply the same standard to everyone you are ok…though I’m not totally sure…I am speaking from a legal perspective….

    • Tim Coolio August 17th, 2015 at 21:00

I can’t figure out why they wear those coverings on their head in this country, they have freedom here to skip them, I guess some of the guys from their tribe must beat them up if they see them off.

      • tracey marie August 18th, 2015 at 07:00

Or they are religous and follow the dictates like jews follow their religion and dictates. Wigs in public and conservative clothes as well…I wonder if their tribes beat them as well.

        • Tim Coolio August 18th, 2015 at 10:08

And I’ve seen ones with their heads completely covered and slits to see through with their eyes,
WHERE DO THEY WORK WHEN THEY LOOK LIKE THAT?

          • tracey marie August 18th, 2015 at 10:11

They don’t work, like xtian, jewish fanatics it is forbidden for women to work or associate with males outside of the family. we have many jewish and xtian families and communities here in our country, duggars represent the xtians.

            • Tim Coolio August 18th, 2015 at 10:15

I can’t imagine what happens in their bedroom at night! I’m sure their parents pick out who they marry!

              • tracey marie August 18th, 2015 at 10:18

For the most part they do. Sex is for procreation, but many find love and companionship and do enjoy sex and the intimacy.

                • Tim Coolio August 18th, 2015 at 10:29

I guess too many Americans are staying single and there’s not enough kids so the immigrants are taken into the country to make up for it.

                  • tracey marie August 18th, 2015 at 10:40

No, our country has always been a land of immigrants, now because the racists are in a howling frenzy too many are falling into their ignorance.

              • Berkeley Suncookies August 19th, 2015 at 14:44

What’s wrong with that, Tim? Our marriages don’t have a success rate and women are second class citizens here still. Forgive my syntax. We still don’t have a woman president while some of these hijab-wearing countries have had women presidents for years.

          • sgmaps August 18th, 2015 at 22:01

That is not a hijab, that is a burka.

  6. AnthonyLook August 17th, 2015 at 20:19

Reminds me of the Spaghetti Strainer case in Oklahoma.

    • tracey marie August 18th, 2015 at 11:21

When the guy insisted on wearing the strainer on his head for his DL picture, claimed his religous right to do so.

  7. CandideThirtythree August 17th, 2015 at 21:33

I smell a fish, Muslims would not use payday loans because interest (riba) is not allowed, A Muslim is not allowed to benefit from lending money or receiving money and usury is haraam (a sin). If usury is a sin then those payday loan places are going to the 12th level of hell because even loan sharks do not charge 500% interest like those places do.

  8. illinoisboy1977 August 18th, 2015 at 10:25

When your religious attire presents a possible security risk to the business, their right to secure their premises takes priority. If they require you to uncover your head, for identification purposes, for the CCTV camera, they have every legal right to refuse service for your non-compliance.

    • tracey marie August 18th, 2015 at 10:44

because a scarf is so scarey to the bigots.

      • illinoisboy1977 August 18th, 2015 at 11:36

Every bank and lending company I’ve ever been in has signs posted. “Please, remove all sunglasses and head coverings, for store (or bank) security. If you fail to comply, you will be asked to leave”. It has nothing to do with bigotry.

        • tracey marie August 18th, 2015 at 11:38

it has everything to do with bigotry, a scarf does not hide the ID of anyone, period.

          • illinoisboy1977 August 18th, 2015 at 11:39

If it covers the hair, it impedes someone from seeing an identifying feature.

            • tracey marie August 18th, 2015 at 11:48

nonsense, funny how your kind are all for religous freedom except for muslims.

              • illinoisboy1977 August 18th, 2015 at 11:59

Religious freedom is for public property, not private premises. The only religious freedom that matters, there, is the property owner’s.

            • whatthe46 August 18th, 2015 at 11:54

how does someones hair being covered impedes their physical identity? it doesn’t.

              • illinoisboy1977 August 18th, 2015 at 11:58

If you listen to police descriptions of suspects, they almost always tell color and length of hair, along with whether it’s wavy, straight, in a pony tail, in a bun, etc.

        • whatthe46 August 18th, 2015 at 11:54

          no they don’t.

          • illinoisboy1977 August 18th, 2015 at 11:58

            They do, in my town.

          • cecilia August 18th, 2015 at 12:02

the banks in my area don’t want anyone wearing hats, sunglasses, etc and it’s all about security. I live in a fairly crime free area but I can understand this policy.

    • Berkeley Suncookies August 19th, 2015 at 14:46

And every US airport has people standing in lines without their shoes going through totally unnecessary screening and they haven’t caught one terrorist due to their fingers running through our things, etc.

      • illinoisboy1977 August 19th, 2015 at 15:39

There’s a big difference between being required to take off your head covering and letting someone go through your belongings. One is a search, the other is not.
