Russell Simmons: ‘Holocaust Is The New N-Word’
Entrepreneur and activist Russell Simmons talked with me about the reaction to using the word “Holocaust” to describe animal abuse after discussing his new “Meditation Made Simple” app. While talking about why he’s a vegan, Simmons mentioned the Anti-Defamation League’s reaction to the way he discussed animal rights and his issues with the ADL’s head, Abraham Foxman.
SIMMONS: Holocaust is the new ‘N’ word so I just call it mass murder. It’s not the the new ‘N’ word, but a word that elicits the kind of response- you know it’s like black people playing the n word…
And I didn’t say it was the Holocaust, it is a holocaust. But Abe Foxman, he’s always, he hasn’t met an African American leader in his life he hasn’t called an anti-Semite. I don’t worry about him. What I do is Foundation For Ethnic Understand, sometimes I’m bringing together Muslims and Jews and blacks and Jews for a living in fifty countries, half the time I feel like he’s undoing it, not doing it, so the Anti-Defamation League means nothing to me. Could care less about their, you know, maybe he’ll leave and somebody smart can take over that foundation and do good work and cause harmony. I feel like the Anti-Defamation League has caused, caused disharmony everyplace they go.

He says in the future he will just refer to “mass murder.” But you don’t use the word murder when referring to animals. Animals are killed, not murdered. The problem with using the word inappropriately is that it loses some of its impact, and people stop listening when the word actually does apply.

I have taken to referring to the Holocaust as the Shoah. That refers specifically to the German slaughter of the Jews in WWII. Figure the Jews should get to name it.

There are and have been many holocausts. THE Holocaust wasn’t the first, it wasn’t the last and it wasn’t the worth.

That genocide didn’t count, because the Christians were doing the work of the Lord, like they did during the Crusades and the inquisition. After all, you know how Jesus hated those godless heathens!

I don’t think holocaust is the new “n” word. It just doesn’t sound right. For example, you wouldn’t say “we have a holocaust in the White house”. It just doesn’t work. I think the new code word for black would be “gangsta”. That sounds better; “we have a gangsta in the White House”.

it’s funny I have many friends who can’t see anything wrong with the Washington “Redskins” name, they mock those who are offended. Offense is in the eye of the beholder. Holocaust had one meaning before the war but now it has a much more specific meaning, and people should avoid using the term indiscriminately.
