League Of The South Official: Booth Didn’t Kill Lincoln Soon Enough
Pat Hines, head of South Carolina’s League of the South chapter, told me on radio he wants his state to be its own country, run and populated by white people. And he said John Wilkes Booth didn’t act quickly enough to kill Abraham Lincoln. He went way beyond earlier comments that removal of the Confederate flag is “cultural genocide.”
COLMES: Now the League Of The South in April had an event celebrating the assassination of President Lincoln.
HINES: That’s right.
COLMES: You support that?
HINES: Yes I do.
COLMES: Why?
HINES: He was the most murderous, treasonous President that ever existed.
COLMES: So you honor the actions of John Wilkes Booth?
HINES: John Wilkes Booth was a Confederate agent, who sadly, he didn’t fulfill his mission for almost 2 1/2 years. But he was assigned to kill Lincoln. And it’s too bad that he took as long as he did to do it.
COLMES: You’re upset that it took John Wilkes Booth as long as it did to kill Abraham Lincoln?
HINES: Yes.
COLMES: Why would you favor the assassination of an American President?
HINES: Well he was an United States President. Well, he was Commander-in-Chief, which makes him a legitimate target immediately.
COLMES: Is any Commander-in-Chief a legitimate target?
HINES: Well they are.

I’ve often thought that if the south had seceded, through war or other means, that within a generation the confederacy would have disintegrated into so many separate countries. Each dominated by different religious factions, trade rules and militias. It would be like having multiple Bosnia/Serbias at our southern border.

Inasmuch as there is no such thing as war without “war on civilians,” I take it as it comes (cf, Shakespeare, Henry V, Act 3, Scene 1). That civilians suffer as a consequence of war is tragic — and inevitable — and I feel no more sorrow or pity at the suffering of Southerners than I do at the suffering of Germans between 1942 and 1945. As Britain’s Arthur “Bomber” Harris put it, they sowed the wind and then they reaped the whirlwind. As has so often been shown, one reason this country has undergone 120+ years of argle-bargle (if one may appropriate a Scaliaism) with the South is that the South — unlike similar existential threats in Nazi Germany and militarist Japan — was not comprehensively defeated. If Lincoln and his successors had had half the cojones of FDR and Truman, I think it’s safe to say much that followed Lee’s surrender would have been quite different.

Yes, it is true that civilians are always impacted by war.
What you fail to understand is that we have evolved in what is acceptable when it comes to war. We have numerous laws and have standards that we did not have when poison gas was used, or when cities were carpet-bombed.
You also fail to see the difference between war in which civilians are impacted tangentially and when they are deliberately targeted.
One wonders if, when you were a PFC, whether you were ever told that killing civilians is illegal and will earn you a cell in Leavenworth.
During the Civil War, the Union strategy evolved to where it became a war on civilians. The Union army not only attacked the Confederate army, but it also made war on civilians.
I am typing this in downtown Fredericksburg, Va., where the Union artillery was set up all along Chatham Heights and they opened fire on the town. They were not shooting at military targets, they were attacking civilians.
Troops were recruited with the promise that they would have a free hand looting the South and they pretty much did. Their strategy was to not just attack the Confederate army, but to steal all the food and starve the people into submission, as well as destroying their homes and carrying off everything of value they could.
Shoot, I know of at least one occasion where the Union army marched into a town in Northern Virginia that was populated by Quakers who supported the Union. They turned out to cheer the troops as they marched into town, but the cheering died out as those same troops set about burning down those people’s barns and began carrying off all their livestock and grain, including the seeds they were going to plant the following year.
Reconstruction was pretty much ended years before Cleveland was elected president.

When I hear comments like those of Mr. Hines, I think that losing the Civil War just wasn’t enough disgrace for some of the southern states. Maybe they should secede and form their own nation just to prove they are really dependent upon the other states for a relatively good standard of life. They would no longer wallow in federal subsidies and have to prove themselves.
