The right-wing is having a very difficult time with Pope Francis’s ecumenical approach to life.

After Pope Francis moved to recognize a Palestinian state, some gung-ho defenders of Israel suggested the pontiff should stick to preaching and stay out of politics.

“It’s interesting how the Vatican has gotten so political when ultimately the Vatican ought to be working to lead people to Jesus Christ and salvation, and that’s what the Church is supposed to do,” said Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.), a hawkish defender of Israel…

“I’m surprised that the pope would recognize Palestine when they’re still haters who want to eliminate Israel off the map and don’t recognize Israel,” said Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), a member of the Israel Allies Caucus. “The Pope is the head of his religion, and he makes those calls for himself, but I represent 700,000 people from East Texas and a vast majority agree with me.”

Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), who co-chairs the caucus, was even bolder, calling the pontiff’s position into question on Biblical grounds.

“He’s a religious figure and he has every right to have his political viewpoint, but someone of that profile should have strong scriptural foundation for whatever positions he takes that are extensively representing the head of the Catholic Church,” Franks said. “I think this is probably one he should not have expressed.”

If he’s gotten them this riled up….he’s doing something right. Bravo, Pope Francis!

“..suggested the pontiff should stick to preaching and stay out of politics”….

If only they would apply the same standards to themselves that they want to put on the pope.

Love it when the teabalican decides to tell the pope and the church what their job is when they disgree with the peace talk coming from the pope.

      YEP.

      • tracey marie May 16th, 2015 at 14:41

        Damn, that is so perfect!

      • whatthe46 May 16th, 2015 at 14:49

there’s no money to be made in peace.

        • Kick Frenzy May 17th, 2015 at 00:16

          I disagree.
There’s plenty to be made in peace, it’s just an actual challenge.

          • whatthe46 May 17th, 2015 at 00:18

really? starting wars to take over a country is a very profitable gig. ask cheney.

            • Kick Frenzy May 17th, 2015 at 00:35

So is renewable energy, especially in the long game.
And trade agreements, selling technology, and so on.

We’re rapidly approaching a time when we won’t have a choice, we’ll need to use renewable sources.
China needs to reduce their pollution by an extreme amount in a very short time… there’s a lot of money to made in the middle of that.

But if you’re talking about Cheney, his dark soul gets off on war and destruction… so, for him it’s more than money.
              For him it’s masturbation.

              • whatthe46 May 17th, 2015 at 00:41

                what?

                • Kick Frenzy May 17th, 2015 at 00:56

That’s what makes money in peace.
Energy, trade, tech, infrastructure… plus the handling and cleaning of pollution will be a significantly bigger business before long as well.

Not to mention who’s going to do the cool stuff?
Like, whose going to build a way to collect our garbage and send it hurtling into the Sun?
There could be money in that.

But really, I’m just saying, I know “war is money” is an old saying, I’m just saying with a little creativity, peacetime can be profitable too.
I’m sorry, I was long winded in my first response and I’m being long winded again with this one.

peace time can be profitable. but, the rwnj’s won’t have any of that. when was the last time you heard any of them talk about peace? they do talk about bombing and killing and war this and war that. and you don’t have to be sorry.

                    • Kick Frenzy May 17th, 2015 at 17:20

Oh yeah, while I think there’s plenty of profit in peace, I’m under no illusion that the Reds actually want anything to do with peace.

It’d just be nice if they considered it at some point in time! ;)

“It’s interesting how the Vatican has gotten so political….
    SUDDENLY.
The conservative faction of right wing Christianity wants to separate religion from politics.

  5. OldLefty May 16th, 2015 at 14:45

Is this the Republican war on Christianity?

  6. @HawaiianTater May 16th, 2015 at 16:13

The irony of a Republican telling the Pope to stick to religion and stay out of politics in irony of an immeasurable level.

“I represent 700,000 people from East Texas and a vast majority agree with me.”

Okay, you represent a fraction of your population (because 700,000 people did not vote for you) of Texas. We all read the news and know the types of people who live there (except Mea-Mark and a few others of course) such as OCT and that dildo in fedora. All that shows to me is you don’t have the brain power to criticize the Pope.

  8. Maxx44 May 16th, 2015 at 18:57

Evangelicals unite! There’s a wacky pope out there who believes in religious tolerance! Oh, the nerve of him!

    • Jimmy Smith May 16th, 2015 at 19:59

And doesn’t hate the poor – how unchristian of him!

  9. mike May 16th, 2015 at 19:23

Interesting…..The right wants the Pope to stay out of politics…… however the right wants to bring religion into politics…. This is going to be a fun 18 months

  10. oldfart May 16th, 2015 at 20:55

Don’t tell me, let me guess, he’s just not Christian enough ?

  11. Andrew C. Kuryla May 16th, 2015 at 21:33

I’d hate to see what these knuckle-draggers would do to an actual Jesus!

    • fahvel May 17th, 2015 at 11:15

cross, nails, crown, sign – what else?

  12. Talkin_Truth May 16th, 2015 at 23:21

Remember when the conservatives accused Obama of waging war on religion for letting women have birth control?

  13. fahvel May 17th, 2015 at 11:15

the scum right will give every catholic vote to anyone countering the pope. He’s one of the few truly overt christian popes in a long time.

  14. fifthdentist May 17th, 2015 at 21:46

It is so groovy when the good old boy Constitution lovers who just love them some Constitution tell people to STFU, especially when they’re telling them to shut up about their religious beliefs.
I love the smell of hypocrisy in the morning. … Smells like victory.
