233,000 Jobs Added In April; Unemployment Down To 5.4%
If Mitt Romney were president he’d be taking credit for the Obama recovery. But the Obama recovery continues.
Conservative critics of President Obama’s economic policies cite the depressed participation rate as evidence of how weak the economy remains, despite other seemingly rosy data points like the falling unemployment rate, healthy corporate profits and a buoyant stock market.
Other experts attribute much of the decline to the retirement of baby boomers, the return of some adults to school and other demographic factors.
Whatever the exact cause, lower labor market participation has caused the unemployment rate to fall, albeit for the wrong reasons.

If unemployment fell to 0.0%, the right would still find a way to crap on Obama. He will never do anything to suit them.

Yep, there are so many jobs out there everyone in Baltimore is gainfully employed and there were really no riots. Black youth unemployment is still above 14%, and black adult unemployment is around 10%. Boy that Obama has really helped them, hasn’t he?

The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. Just type in “black youth unemployment rate” in your search bar and you will be taken there.

StoneyCurtisll May 8th, 2015 at 16:02
Oh…
Now the overall unemployment rate should be based on “black youth”?
Why not kick it up a notch and base it on elderly white females..
I bet that would be even higher.
Hirightnow May 8th, 2015 at 19:02
Damned lazy crochet junkies!
Kick Frenzy May 8th, 2015 at 19:17
You know what would really help?
Comparing it to the numbers from the day Obama was inaugurated as POTUS, then one year later, then current.
Now, is the trend that those numbers are getting worse, staying the same, or getting better?
(Hint: The answer is they’re better, which means that Obama HAS been helping them.)
StoneyCurtisll May 9th, 2015 at 09:02
I’m going to take your BLS number of 14-24% “unemployed black youth”..
I have to wonder..
What is the point you are trying to make?
That “black youths” are lazy, shiftless, unemployable, or genetically unfit for being productive members of society?..
Thats the impression I get from your comment.
pignose4.0 May 8th, 2015 at 14:58
Tell us what the cons have done for good paying jobs with their control of both houses of congress. They have done everything they could to bring down the economy they blocked every jobs idea Obama put forth so when elections come around the chicken shits can crow about how he did nothing for the middle class and they should be rewarded for doing nothing.
StoneyCurtisll May 8th, 2015 at 16:06
Have you seen how many elderly white females are unemployed?
According to the BLS, it’s nearing 80-90%
Obama has declared war on the elderly female population…

arc99 May 8th, 2015 at 16:39
Please stop pretending you care about unemployment in the black community or for that matter anything else other than opportunities to lie about the President’s record.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2015/02/06/the-group-thats-seen-the-slowest-unemployment-recovery-under-obama-black-americans/
But the high point in unemployment for black Americans didn’t hit until March of 2010, at 16.8 percent. This means this demographic group has had less time to recover from that high. If we shift all of the groups to the same starting point (peak unemployment), you can see that black unemployment is still dropping more slowly relative to the peak, but less dramatically different. In other words, the trajectory is similar; it’s just happening a bit later.
bpollen May 9th, 2015 at 03:26
You don’t give a SHITE about black unemployment…
You obviously are delusional if you believe anybody is gonna buy your crocodile tears. If hypocrisy was music, you’d be a frickin’ brass band!

Larry Schmitt May 8th, 2015 at 12:23
I remember seeing some “pundit” say something like that the first time the rate went down during his administration. The guy was saying that the number the Labor Dept uses doesn’t reflect the real blah blah blah. Which may have been true, but what he “forgot” to mention is that it was the same calculation used by both republican and democratic administrations for decades.
Larry Schmitt May 8th, 2015 at 12:31
Here is part of a post on Market Watch:
“First of all; does anyone actually believe that these job reports have any truth to them? The numbers are so bogus it is laughable.”
Since the same methods have been used for decades to issue the jobs reports, you have to compare each new report to previous ones, to see the trend.

arc99 May 8th, 2015 at 16:01
Comedian Steven Wright once said that 75% of all statistics are made up out of thin air.
I think your 14% is an example.
You ignore the retirement of the largest generation in history, e.g. baby boomers.
You ignore the youngest members of the workforce choosing to go back to school in an improving economy
You ignore the reality that with the ACA, people have more freedom to leave the workforce and start their own businesses.
You simply parrot the latest talking points of mindless Obama-haters.

Where are the jobs that Republican Tax Cuts were supposed to give us? If you wanna complain about the unemployment rate, perhaps a little research into the history of “trickle-down economic success stories” would be in order for someone GENUINELY interested in the subject. Of course, if you are only an avian mimic spouting talking points, you won’t do anything of the sort.

They’ve managed to keep the minimum wage from going up. They’ve managed to keep the tunnel for exporting jobs flowing freely. They’ve managed to suppress unions and damaged those that are still here. They’ve kept the polluters happy and the defense industry happy and the Billionaires happy.
True Blue May 8th, 2015 at 21:43
The problem with the minimum wage going up is that it hurts those it is suppose to help. It is hard to pass up hiring people with experience for someone just entering the workforce. Companies can be more selective in those whom they employ thus the least skilled and least experienced will typically be excluded. The unemployment rate for teenagers is 17.1%

StoneyCurtisll May 8th, 2015 at 15:52
Good news on unemployment…(5.4%)
Is bad news for the GOP and their chances in the upcoming election.
Historically, anything much lower than 5-4% is considered full employment and has the potential for increased wages to follow…(and bad news for big business)
Kick Frenzy May 8th, 2015 at 19:56
And at the rate it’s been going, we’ll easily get to ~4% by the time Obama leaves office.
REOjim May 8th, 2015 at 21:55
which includes part time workers. … So, if you consider someone working 1 hour a week… then yes… we have full employment. How many FULL time jobs were created?

It is cautious optimism because of all the other factors that drive the unemployment number. The U6 is a better judge of the economy. The number has been steadily coming down from a high of 17.1% to 10.8 now. That is the good news.

The Bush recession would have been a depression if it weren’t for those evil Democrats and their programs. Social Security, Medicare, unemployment, SNAP, WIC, ending child labor, Medicaid, 40 work week, section 8, and a list of more beneficial programs that kept the situation from getting MUCH worse.

There are only 3.18 million Americans..
23% of the population is under 18 years of age..(to young to work)
And the 15% who are of retirement age…(65 and over)
Maybe if you want to include the handicapped and disabled..
Or women who choose not to work, (raising children at home) or housewives..

Just out of curiosity, what is your ideal rate for employment?..
And what is the maximum number of “americans” you would accept as unemployed, (not working)..
Most economist calculate ‘full employment’ , (depending on many variables) to be above 3% and lower than 6.5% of the population..
If you want to piss and moan about “93 million americans” not working,, do what Ronald Reagan did, call em lazy, and show them the want ads in a news paper, point out all the jobs they are unqualified for, and then remind them they are lazy and just wanna live off the rest of us..(worked for him as a photo op)..
It did nothing for the 10.7% unemployment rate when he was president.
rg9rts May 9th, 2015 at 04:34

Saints Fan May 11th, 2015 at 16:32
58% of statistics are made up on the spot. Oooops, I meant 74%. Even with the statistics used, think about this. Unemployment in 2013 topped out at 8.0%, and has steadily fallen since. This is not a result of the president, as the president does not make fiscal policy (fact, not fiction). Instead, Congress does. In 2011, Republicans took over the majority role in the House of Representatives, and in 2014, took over the Senate for full control of Congress. This coincides with the improving unemployment rate. How is this a Democratic accomplishment? Democrats controlled Congress since 2006, and unemployment rose steadily to 10% in 2009. No matter who wants to take credit, these are the facts. But please, don’t believe me, look it up for yourselves. It would be great to have some Liberals actually educate themselves.
