Ben Carson Courageously Calls For An End To Selfies

This is the kind of issue that can make a person president.

In an op-ed for the Washington Post’s seventh annual “Spring Cleaning” series, the potential 2016 Republican presidential candidate has nominated selfies as something “we’re better off without.” Carson offers up a brief history of the selfie before arriving at the invention of the selfie stick.

“The selfie stick ushers in a new, even worse and more dangerous era for the form. The stick doesn’t just validate selfies by building a cottage industry around them. It also says, ‘Snap them everywhere!’” he writes. “Please stop.”

Seflies are lethal, argues Carson.

…beyond the obvious narcissism of endlessly photographing oneself and blasting it over social networks for others to admire, selfies are dangerous — to animals, sports spectators, artwork and the rest of us. Last August, a Polish couple fell to their deaths off a cliff in Portugal, reportedly while trying to snap a selfie. And after a plane crash killed two people in Colorado last year, investigators blamed a pilot selfie session in the cockpit of the Cessna 150K.

Selfies are the new metrosexuality — a cultural phenomenon conservatives vaguely understand but assume must be (a) liberal and (b) responsible for the decline of civilization.

maybe just banning talking about them in a Cessna cockpit would be enough?

All I can say is even a broke clock is right twice a day.

No one on the right seemed to have a problem with “selfies”, until Obama did one.

I see kids in my classes taking selfies constantly (except during class of course) and it drives me nuts!!!!! They think people on their social sites want to see a pic of them every 30 seconds. It pisses me off and scares the hell out of me at the same time, I wonder if they will mature enough in a few years to support themselves.

Have you considered the fact that we’ll be relying on them to pay into our Social Security?

        • Suzanne McFly April 10th, 2015 at 06:27

I think about that every moment of every day.

            Nightmare material.
Oh, and they can vote, too.

Ms. McFly, I have room for one other person in my bomb shelter….

              What about my puppies? :)

I am sure your puppies are marvelous. If you have pets, they can come too…

more frightening than them growing up and getting a job is, who they are or aren’t. The selfie world is a composite of those folks without any sense of self/self worth – their egos are actually diminished and their snapshotting is some symbolic scam to validate their being.

They will be ruined by the time they hit 29, vanity is a sad asset.

Selfies are dangerous says the man who is a hero to those who think it is great family fun to teach a child of grade school age to shoot.

Alice, Wonderland ain’t got nothin on us!

Marksmanship builds concentration, confidence and trust

It’s a terrible time to say this, right after a 9-year-old girl killed her instructor with an Uzi, but shooting guns can be great for kids.

Until this thing involving cameras came along, I used to think a “selfie” was something else, done in private where no one could see what I was doing or nuthin’……..

    Oh yeah!
It’s a national or even a world crisis.
    Good on you, Ben!
What can you think of next?
    I know what.
Masturbation is very bad for your health and it’s a mortal sin… a definite world crisis.
You’re a great quack and religious fanatic, people will believe you.
    Especially the right wing nuts.

I think selfies are kind of silly, myself, but I’m not going to blame the woes of the world on them. Besides, self-portraits are why tripods and cameras with shutter timers exist. If I want to protest selfies, I don’t waste my time and effort denouncing them; I just don’t take them.
