America Only Four Presidents Old
Eat your heart out Kevin Bacon. There are only four degrees of separation when it comes to U.S. Presidents.
When President Obama was born (1961), President Herbert Hoover was still alive (1874-1964). When Hoover was born, President Andrew Johnson (1808-1875) was still alive. When President Johnson was born, President John Adams (1735-1826) was still alive. And just like that, we’ve connected present day to the Founding Fathers.

What I find most remarkable is to be reminded of the fact that John Adams lived to be 90 years old. In an era where medical science included bleeding people with leeches, Adams must have been one tough old bird.
Anecdotally, the first photograph of any man who ever served as President of the United States was of his son John Quincy Adams, photographed after he left office.
Seeing an actual photograph of a man who personally laid eyes on Washington, Jefferson, Franklin et al kind of gives me goosebumps. It is an experience that future generations will take for granted as many of us will still be around when some of the oldest talking movies are 100 years old.

Just an anecdote; the founding fathers owned many slaves of African ancestry and President Obama…well you now the rest.

True enough. I look at it this way. When it comes to personal immorality, our first President was a slave owner. Our 42nd President was an adulterer who lied about his affair.
I consider that to be significant progress.

When I was eight years old, back in the mid fifties, I was introduced to the great grandfather of a friend of my dad’s. This man was one of the last surviving veterans of the Union Army, he apparently served as a drummer boy for some regiment. He also claimed to have seen Lincoln with his own eyes when the president visited an encampment late in the war. I was just becoming aware of these things and I asked him what did Lincoln look like- he replied he was the ‘tallest, ugliest man you ever saw’.

Bush and Obama are eighth cousins.

Amazing stuff…
As I am watching an old movie, Dead End with Humphrey Bogart and actors who would later be known as The Bowery Boys…
They are all dead now..
But it’s a classic movie worth the time watching.
