Obama: ‘We’re The Slaves Who Built The White House’

Posted by | March 8, 2015 09:30 | Filed under: Politics Pot Luck Top Stories

The oratorical wizardry that has marked so much of President Obama’s public life was on display in Selma.

“Look at our history. We are Lewis and Clark and Sacajawea, pioneers who braved the unfamiliar, followed by a stampede of farmers and miners, and entrepreneurs and hucksters. That’s our spirit. That’s who we are.

“We are Sojourner Truth and Fannie Lou Hamer, women who could do as much as any man and then some. And we’re Susan B. Anthony, who shook the system until the law reflected that truth. That is our character.

“We’re the immigrants who stowed away on ships to reach these shores, the huddled masses yearning to breathe free –- Holocaust survivors, Soviet defectors, the Lost Boys of Sudan. We’re the hopeful strivers who cross the Rio Grande because we want our kids to know a better life. That’s how we came to be. (Applause.)

“We’re the slaves who built the White House and the economy of the South. (Applause.) We’re the ranch hands and cowboys who opened up the West, and countless laborers who laid rail, and raised skyscrapers, and organized for workers’ rights.

“We’re the fresh-faced GIs who fought to liberate a continent. And we’re the Tuskeegee Airmen, and the Navajo code-talkers, and the Japanese Americans who fought for this country even as their own liberty had been denied.

    Freedom.

  2. jasperjava March 8th, 2015 at 10:31

I read a transcript of the speech last night. Obama has delivered several barn-burning humdingers in his time, and this is one of his best.

Decades from now, people will still be reading and studying these speeches as examples of effective oratory, and to better understand the success of the greatest President of the early 21st century, who triumphed over an insane, rabid, unhinged racist opposition.

    • craig7120 March 8th, 2015 at 11:22

      Well said, JJ
I don’t always agree with our POTUS but when the man hits one, it’s out of the park.
I respect the office, the hard work and sacrifice it takes to get there and succeed. He’s a better man than myself, I would of not been able to handle the hate.

      • bpollen March 8th, 2015 at 21:13

I don’t always agree with anybody, even my wife!

        (Don’t tell my wife that!)

      • John Tarter March 9th, 2015 at 09:50

Better man than yourself? You mean you lie more than he does?

        • craig7120 March 9th, 2015 at 10:52

Hey, what’s up? You didn’t answer my question, do you think a persons civil rights should be restricted because of their sexual preference? If yes, is it because of your religious beliefs?

          • John Tarter March 9th, 2015 at 11:52

Marriage , same sex or otherwise, is not mentioned in the Federal Constitution, therefore it is a state issue. Let the people of the various states decide that one. All citizens should be accommodated in the public sphere, but forcing people to participate in something that goes against their religious belief’s is wrong. It used to be about common respect in this country, but the gay activists don’t see it that way. It’s all about forcing acceptance of something that is against the natural law.

            • craig7120 March 9th, 2015 at 12:08

Forcing people to participate in what? What is “something”?

        • craig7120 March 9th, 2015 at 12:13

I think we all lie. Do you lie? Of course you do.
You didn’t understand what I wrote or you chose to be ignorant. He’s a far better man than me, I wouldn’t of handle the hate directed towards myself in comparison, understand?

    • tracey marie March 8th, 2015 at 14:46

      very good!

    • John Tarter March 9th, 2015 at 09:54

The best President ever! In fact, the best leader the world has ever had since the beginning of time, bar none! We are so privileged to have him, poems will be written about him, all nations will revere him, histories will extoll him! Oh my God I can hardly contain myself. What will we ever do when he leaves office?

      • craig7120 March 9th, 2015 at 10:59

I know! LOL the one thing I like about President Obama is the way he makes you look, it’s funny.
He beat the people you voted for twice, that’s awesome, right?
The president is trying to make you a better person, why are you resisting?

        • jasperjava March 9th, 2015 at 11:35

Wayout / John Tarter has no interest in becoming a better person. His identity is intimately wrapped up in being a mean, miserable, ignorant right-wing bigot.

        • John Tarter March 9th, 2015 at 11:54

Making me a better person by all his lying? Time after time he has done this and to me that is not something to look up to.

          • StoneyCurtisll March 9th, 2015 at 15:37

You have sore loser written all over your face..
            get over it..
next election you have another chance to lose again.

  3. jybarz March 8th, 2015 at 11:20

I can understand why Chris Matthews said this: “I Felt This Thrill Going Up My Leg” As Obama Spoke.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/02/13/chris-matthews-i-felt-thi_n_86449.html

He’s right and can’t blame the bugger.

  4. craig7120 March 8th, 2015 at 11:28

    Thank you, Mr President

  5. Suzanne McFly March 8th, 2015 at 14:16

He does not just read these speeches, he feels the words in his bones and that is why this President has people like myself who will stand shoulder to shoulder with him against any pathetic beast the rwnj’s can throw at him.

    • tracey marie March 8th, 2015 at 14:45

      that was beautiful!

      • whatthe46 March 8th, 2015 at 14:46

wasn’t it though. this man is wonderful.

        • tracey marie March 8th, 2015 at 14:47

he really is wonderful, the obvious racism from the right will be studied and used as an example of what was wrong with our country at this time. One repub went to celebrate this time in history of the beginning of the end of racism, only one.

          • whatthe46 March 8th, 2015 at 14:51

            pretty pathetic.

          • Suzanne McFly March 8th, 2015 at 16:00

In 2016, we need to have a commercial played 24/7 stating the fact that only one repub went to Selma on the 50 year anniversary, force the right to embrace their stances.

            • Tex Wobbles March 8th, 2015 at 21:34

True. The republican “national congressional” turn out was miserably low at approximately 2 dozen (which by the way is more than one). There were a lot of state level as well as former Pres Bush that were in attendance… So “stating the fact that only one repub went” is factually not the truth. If you want to state “fact” then the commercial should actually state fact.

              • tracey marie March 8th, 2015 at 23:12

when a rwnj comes here to lie and twist it makes us laugh

                • Tex Wobbles March 8th, 2015 at 23:33

Funny how 23 (as I stated) congressional republicans attended and I am accused of “lie and twist” that is so extremely rich….

                • 1fcV5 March 8th, 2015 at 23:34

Where did he lie? It looks here more like Suz McFly is the liar. “Only one Repub went to Selma” she states is a “fact”. What do you do when dems lie?

                  • tracey marie March 8th, 2015 at 23:37

                    troll brought a friend, yuck

                    • 1fcV5 March 8th, 2015 at 23:42

I actually just happened upon this site. A troll, since you obviously don’t know, is someone who can’t debate the facts & then resorts to attacks & name calling. It looks like that is you. Are you afraid of an honest debate?

                    • tracey marie March 8th, 2015 at 23:46

I have read your history, you are a troll and a racist asshole.. have fun playing with yourself

                    • 1fcV5 March 8th, 2015 at 23:59

I am not a racist nor am I a troll, but u obviously have some issues.

                    • tracey marie March 8th, 2015 at 23:59

                      stop lying

                    • 1fcV5 March 9th, 2015 at 00:00

                      Yeah, ok

for me it is evening, I could not sleep and thought I would find some Friends on this site…I see it was infested by politico trolls

                    • fahvel March 10th, 2015 at 05:04

bummer – at least with the time difference I have the rest of the day to detroll – hope ya got some rest.

                    • mea_mark March 9th, 2015 at 18:04

You say your not a troll but in your comments you name call which you say makes a person a troll. Look in the mirror.

              • fahvel March 9th, 2015 at 04:58

why is that when someone pops up with something sub intelligent to say they continue to babble around in circles to vindicate their emptiness – which only exposes them to be emptier than previously revealed? Take your dog for a walk or something kind and benign where thinking isn’t a big deal.

                • Tex Wobbles March 9th, 2015 at 14:01

So stating of FACT is “sub intelligent” in your world? Nice…..

              • Suzanne McFly March 9th, 2015 at 15:03

Okay, how’s this “24 republicans came to the march in support for the Selma 50 year anniversary, the other thousands in attendance were either registered Democrats or Democratic political leaders”. How is that for you, I added your whole 23 more republicans because that makes up a whole lot of difference.

                • Tex Wobbles March 9th, 2015 at 15:51

No!!! First, 23 congressional republicans plus former Pres and Mrs Bush alone would make more than what you want to state as “Fact”.. Second, You have absolutely NO way of verifying that all the rest were Democrats. STICK TO VERIFIABLE FACTS…
The Republican National Congressional turn out was excessively, miserably low with 23 rank and file and only one from the Leadership. Former Pres and Mrs. Bush were in attendance as well.
Those facts still pisses my off.. They are verifiable. Why do you think you have to flat out lie to make a point when the Facts alone can make the same d$%#$ point and can NOT be contradicted.

                  • Suzanne McFly March 9th, 2015 at 17:33

I come here to talk to like minded people, not discuss issues with people who want to push buttons. I have a job where my buttons are pushed, so I don’t need to deal with it when I come here to discuss issues with friends. You want to be angry and use your caps to make your points, go ahead but you are boring me and I will not take part of your rant.

          • Tex Wobbles March 8th, 2015 at 21:58

So with multiple events dating back nearly 20 years prior to the Selma March (which was significant) and you consider the Selma march the “beginning”?

            48 Truman military order
54 Brown v. Board of Education
            55 Emmett Till, Rosa Parks
57 SCLC formed, Little Rock Nine
60 NC Ag and Tech, SNCC founded
            61 “Freedom riders”
            62 James Meredith
63 Many.. Including march on DC and “I Have a Dream”
64 24th ammend, COFO, Civil Rights Act, Neshoba County Miss

            • tracey marie March 8th, 2015 at 23:11

stop already, you are making yourself look foolish

              • Tex Wobbles March 8th, 2015 at 23:15

I think you are the one making yourself look foolish by completely ignoring earlier significant events.

                • tracey marie March 8th, 2015 at 23:16

or you are rwnj lying and trolling…have fun playing with yourself

                  • Tex Wobbles March 8th, 2015 at 23:20

Are you trying to say that the earlier events were irrelevant ? Really???? I was saying Selma was important just not the beginning..

    • John Tarter March 9th, 2015 at 10:01

Yes we know, you will stand with a man who is eviscerating the Constitution of the United States. That is nothing to be proud of.

      • William March 9th, 2015 at 10:15

It gives me great comfort to know that as the rest of the nation celebrates real progress in the advancement of human rights, and dignity, there are still sniveling little angry people skulking in the shadows whose days are ruined by their own racism and hate. You will continue to serve as an example of what a bad American really is.

        • arc99 March 9th, 2015 at 11:26

People like JT actually consider themselves to be proud Americans. But they are nothing of the sort.

They are proud Americans only when they win elections. When they lose they are hateful psychotics and we have ample evidence in this forum and hundreds of others just like it for the past 6 years.

I am glad that some Republicans chose to attend the ceremonies on Satruday. Still, it was mostly a demonstration of style over substance as it is the GOP that is working to gut the Voting Rights Act that LBJ signed after Selma.

No, the work is not yet done and people like Tarter are a helpful reminder.

          • William March 9th, 2015 at 13:32

The beauty of the entire situation is that Tarter and his ilk are prisoners of their own racism and hate. Imagine what sort of a life that must be.
Steeped in a stew of outrageous bigotry and misery, just because a black guy had the audacity to get elected President.

      • arc99 March 9th, 2015 at 11:19

Was wondering if you would pollute this thread with your ignorant lies and psychotic hatred. I need wonder on more….

Do me a favor. Can you post a link to a right wing forum where the participants actually believe the garbage you write? I am curious about what kind of people would be that stupid.

        • John Tarter March 9th, 2015 at 11:57

My lies? Just reminding you sycophants of the truth. Even liberal law professor Jonathan Turley has called this man to account for what he has done to the Constitution and the separation of powers doctrine.

          • arc99 March 9th, 2015 at 12:11

Yes, your LIES. Prof. Turley’s opinion is one man’s opinion. The history of our republic shows that even on the highest court in the land, the Supreme Court, decisions are almost never unanimous. Yet you claim the President is “eviscerating” the Constitution. I say bullsh*t.

Right wingers have the House and the Senate. So where are the impeachment proceedings? If it is so obvious the President is “eviscerating” the Constitution, impeachment should be a slam dunk. But I think deep down inside even you right wingers recognize that your rants are utter bullsh*t.

No different than when President Bush was in office and you guys accused anyone who critcized the war of being a “traitor”. Yet not one formal accusation of treason was reported to the FBI.

You guys are long on hysteria. But when it comes to the truth, you are woefully lacking.

          • arc99 March 9th, 2015 at 12:24

Recently Prof Turley wrote a column expressing concern that Americans who tortured people are not being prosecuted. May we assume that your coronation of Turley as infallible artbiter of Constitutional truth means you also concur with his conclusions in that regard?

            http://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2014/12/10/torture-report-laws-international-prosecution-immunity-restraints-cia-truth-column/20166711/

      • craig7120 March 9th, 2015 at 12:24

Do you line up with Joe Silk of Oklahoma? Gays shouldn’t be allowed to eat anywhere they want, you agree? Speaking of rights. ….

      • Suzanne McFly March 9th, 2015 at 14:26

Please expand on your thoughts, exactly how is he “eviscerating” the Constitution? I have a degree in history and I would love to learn about something that I have acquired the knowledge to be able to see when the Constitution is being trampled upon, and yet I don’t see it. If you can prove where the President has done something outside of his duties, I can then go back to my University and get my money back since they did not educate me properly.

        • StoneyCurtisll March 9th, 2015 at 14:51

Don’t hold your breath waiting for Tater turd to respond.

          • Suzanne McFly March 9th, 2015 at 14:59

I can picture him getting out a dictionary to figure out what eviscerate means even though it is the word he used.

      • StoneyCurtisll March 9th, 2015 at 14:50
