Of Course President Obama Was Bullshitting On Gay Marriage, Or We Wouldn’t Have Any

Former senior Obama adviser and current book-promoter David Axelrod has stunned the political world with the revelation, in his new tome Believer: My 40 Years In Politics, that Barack Obama supported gay marriage long before he completed his public “evolution” on the topic. From Time:

“I’m just not very good at bullshitting,” Obama told Axelrod, after an event where he stated his opposition to same-sex marriage, according to the book.

…“Opposition to gay marriage was particularly strong in the black church, and as he ran for higher office, he grudgingly accepted the counsel of more pragmatic folks like me, and modified his position to support civil unions rather than marriage, which he would term a ‘sacred union,’”

“…Yet if Obama’s views were “evolving” publicly, they were fully evolved behind closed doors. The president was champing at the bit to announce his support for the right of gay and lesbian couples to wed—and having watched him struggle with this issue for years, I was ready, too.”

As we all know now, the president eventually did come out in favor of legalizing gay marriage, but only after Vice President Joe Biden kind of let the horse out of the barn, and too long after his declaration that his views were “evolving” on the subject. In that historic ABC News interview, the president went a long way toward explaining himself, telling Robin Roberts, “I have always been adamant that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equally,” listing a series of his administration’s accomplishments.

He said he “hesitated” on gay marriage because…READ MORE

And we can also add that he was lying about his Christian faith. At a forum with Pastor Rick Warren in 2008 Obama said this: political beliefs, Obama declared: “I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. Now, for me as a Christian–for me–for me as a Christian, it is also a sacred union. God’s in the mix.”

Tell the class again where Jesus mentions homosexuality, Johnny?

      • John Tarter February 11th, 2015 at 10:13

Let’s see, he talks about one man having one wife and what God has brought together should not be torn asunder. Since we know that marriage at that time was only between a male and a female we can be assured that Jesus did not have same sex marriage in mind. How’s that, close enough?

            Uh oh.
            The law of the land.

Hey William, the other day we were talking about jets and stuff and I mentioned the Soviets had stolen our jet technology. I loged off, but then spent a good chunk of time looking it up in my notes and then put up a post the next day listing about a dozen of their spies and what they stole here.
I don’t know if you saw it or not.

Ok, well I’ll post it in the Wednesday Open thread. I don’t want to clutter this one up. Gimme a couple minutes and it’ll be there.

Jesus Christ did come out and clearly command us to love our neighbor as ourselves.
How can you oppose equality for your neighbor and follow the commandment to love him?
It’s outside of love to insist someone not have the same rights you do.

He was not lying at all. You are.

Did candidate Obama say that his personal religious views should carry the force of law?

And I suppose the faith of these Israeli rabbis is not as rock solid as they make it out to be either?

He doesn’t come right out and mention it, but he alludes to it’s sinful nature and the people he chose to pick up the mantle of the new faith after him expounded on the way to live a holy life. As for marriage, Jesus talks about one man having one wife and what God has brought together should not be torn asunder. Since we know that marriage at that time was always only between a male and a female, we can be assured that Jesus did not have same sex marriage in mind.

I’m happy to know that he was always for gay marriage, I suspected he was that smart. I’m not al all shocked to learn that a politician modulated his personal views for political reasons, they all pretend to be religiously devout to get elected IMHO.

President Obama will be remembered as the one who made marriage equality possible. In 2008 it was still toxic politically. Attitudes changed so quickly that when President Obama came out in favor in 2011 it opened the floodgates.

It’s one thing to get bullshat once, but to get a second dose on the same subject is a tad much.
Ok, so the man lied to get elected. This is not uncommon. I think we all pretty much knew it at the time, and there was an understandable argument to leave it to the states.
But let’s not bullshit about the bullshit.
