Don’t Believe The Hype: Republican Women Didn’t Stop Abortion Bill, Obama Did

To hear the mainstream media tell it, Republicans were thwarted in their efforts to pass an anti-abortion bill that contained an odious rape and incest exception by women in the House Republican caucus who found the measure too extreme. This is even the story being told by Democrats on the Hill as they argued against yet another Republican assault on choice, but it’s just not true.

What is true is that on Tuesday afternoon, two of the Republican women who had co-sponsored H.R. 36, Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-IN) and Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC), removed themselves as co-sponsors of the bill:

“Mr. speaker, I ask unanimous consent to remove myself as a co-sponsor of H.R. 36.”

Following that, the House GOP decided to drop plans to vote on the measure on the 42nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, allegedly because of a revolt among “women and moderates” in the party. While it is true that the decision to pull the bill is based on a desire to appear more moderate and friendly toward women, it had nothing to do with the bill being to extreme, and to the extent they had a “come to Jesus” moment, they were brought to Jesus by President Obama…READ MORE

    Good for the President, he may not agree with abortion but he is smart enough to know it is none of his business, only women may make the decision for themselves.

      I’ve always thought that people without uteruses (uteri?) should have no vote with regards to abortion issues. But what do I know?

    Good to know. I turned on the tv and I was listening between doing chores and I over heard the GOP women stopped the bill. I did a quick search online for the story and found stories about how this occurred and after a quick skim of a couple articles, I assumed it was true. I guess I should of invested more time to find out that it actually was my President who stopped it. It is very easy to be an active listener and reader of the news and still be ignorant of what is truly happening.

    Republicans trying to take away women’s rights
    to control their bodies, they need to remember;
    outlawing abortion doesn’t stop any abortions,
    it only stops safe abortions,
    abortion is an issue for the individual not for
    rightwing big government.

      the well off and the rich will just jet off to some forward looking country for the weekend so their darling daughters can get ‘fixed’, but not like a dog would be fixed.
      The poor and the lower middle class women can get back in the kitchen

    I knew all along this was nothing but a ploy to try to make themselves look moderate. These are radical, far far right wing tea partiers, Ellmers, Blackburn, Walorski…are three of the worst of the worst.
    The entire thing, ( i hope) is DOA when it gets to the whitehouse…
