Would-Be Assassin Of Pope John Paul II Visits His Tomb
Mehmet Ali, who shot Pope John Paul II in 1981, made a visit back to the Vatican to visit the final resting place of the man he tried to kill.
“I felt the need to make this gesture,” he told police, according to Italian media who had been tipped off in advance about his visit. Agca’s visit came exactly 31 years after John Paul visited him in prison in Rome to forgive him for the 1981 shooting that nearly killed the leader of the world’s Catholics.
In addition, Ali asked for an audience with the current Pontiff. While he was allowed to visit the tomb of John Paul II, he will not be chatting up Pope Francis any time soon.
