Four Indicted New York Politicians Win Reelection
Four newly elected lawmakers in New York have another hurdle to face in their near future: avoiding prison time.
Hey, it’s New York. That’s so normal there.
Rep. Michael Grimm was re-elected to his Staten Island-based House seat despite losing backing of the GOP after a 20-count indictment in April on tax related and other charges tied to his ownership of a Manhattan restaurant prior to his career in Congress. Nevertheless, Grimm forged ahead with his campaign and cruised to victory with a 13-point win over Democratic opponent Domenic Recchia, the Associated Press reported.
Arrested just last month, Democrat New York Assemblyman William Scarborough ran uncontested for his Queens-based seat. Scarborough, the New York Times reported, had been charged with stealing from the state for trying to be reimbursed for $40,000 worth of non-existent travel expenses. The paper added the lawmaker, who faces both state and federal court charges and an 11-count indictment, has been accused of misusing campaign funds for personal expenses.
Similarly, State Senator John Sampson easily won reelection with 86 percent of the vote from his Brooklyn district, the Associated Press reported. Sampson, facing his own legal woes, recently had a pair of embezzlement counts dismissed. However, the Brooklyn Democrat has a trial date set for February and could been sentenced to over 100 years in prison for additional charges including obstruction of justice, witness and evidence tampering, according to Newsday.
And Republican State Sen. Thomas Libous took home a majority of his upstate district’s support with 62 percent of the vote defeating his Democratic opponent, the Associated Press reported. Libous, the number two Republican in the state’s Senate, also faces trial in 2015 following an indictment in July on federal charges of lying to federal agents, the New York Times.

Although I knew it was going to happen, I was still stunned when Grimm won. Seriously people? My grandma had a theory that you just voted for the new guy, spread the wealth so to speak. That may have been a good way to go in these races.
