West Virginia Trooper Accidentally Shoots Himself Following A Training Session

A West Virginia State Police Trooper accidentally shot himself while cleaning an off-duty weapon on Monday at the State Police Academy in Institute.

According to WSAZ, Lt. Michael Baylous, spokesman for the State Police, said there was an accidental discharge of the weapon and the trooper shot himself in the hand and wrist area.

The trooper was cleaning and dismantling a gun following a training session when it accidentally discharged just before 5:00 p.m.

The trooper’s name has not been released and he is expected to recover.

Off-duty weapons are typically not carried by troopers while in uniform.

However, weapons are approved for troopers to carry concealed while off-duty.

According to Baylous,  there are several different types of off-duty weapons. “All of them are different in how they function and for whatever reason there was a round that went off while he was handling that weapon,” he said.

Did trooper pass the training session? If no then retrain, if yes then redesign training session.

It is really not that difficult to understand how this could happen. Take a small Semi-Auto in which you go to rack the slide to clear the chamber of a live round. And if you are not careful, and your trigger finger is not where it is supposed to be…..

The ammosexuals so casually dismiss these events and find them easy to understand. Never mind that supposed professionals are shooting themselves or others nearly every day. The gun fetishists and the NRA continue to encourage people who are even less “professional” to buy more and more weapons that they don’t know how to clean, let alone use. Will it take a shooting per hour to change their minds? Per minute? Do we need a constant national stream of gunfire?

Oh, FFS! A training session then cleaning the pistol and he didn’t take the most basic of precautions? This is supposed to be a person who is familiar with guns and he shoots himself! I’m soooo glad that we have an excess of them all over our country in the hands of people who have them without training.

“…several different types of off-duty weapons.” who gives a rat’s ass. shouldn’t the principle still be the same? make sure the weapon is free of ammo? damn he’s just dumb.

Most police agencies have shooting range privileges or their own ranges and provide the ammo for free to encourage practice. I wonder if this is a “work related” injury and thus he will be eligible for medical retirement with say 80% or better benefits. He will of course be added to the long list of police officers shot in the line of duty, LOL.
