Autopsy: St. Louis Officer Shot Myers From Behind

An 18-year-old killed in early October by a St. Louis police officer was shot from several times from behind, an autopsy reveals.

Pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht, who conducted the autopsy at the request of Vonderrit Myers Jr.’s family, outlined his findings at a news conference. Attorneys for the family say the findings suggest that Myers was running away from the officer during the fatal Oct. 8 confrontation…

Wecht said Myers was struck eight times and six of the wounds were to the back side of his body. The fatal wound was to the side of the head. Police have said Myers shot first at the officer. Wecht said the autopsy found gunpowder residue on Myers.

Earlier this month, police released details of lab tests by the Missouri State Highway Patrol that showed gunshot residue on Myers’ hand, waistband and shirt. Police union leaders said the finding dispelled claims by Myers’ family that he didn’t shoot at the officer.

The family has claimed Myers was unarmed, and that the officer mistook a sandwich he was holding for a gun.

    You can actually be running from a cop and get shot in the back while you’re shooting back at the cop (3 times).

        I find it… disconcerting… that two days after the Mike Brown autopsy confirms the police story, another Myers autopsy comes out to conflict with that officer’s story (and the accompanying forensics mentioned in the article). It sets the stage for Ferguson protesters to have a greater distrust of the evidence reports.

          I submit that very few of the Ferguson protesters (and myself) have absolutely no doubt that the “evidence” report will cover the ass of Officer Wilson. The Man protects his own, and justice is non-existent for a black teenager in the US of Amerika.

            ain’t that the truth. do we even have video evidence of the purchase of a sandwich in the store? can the clerk verify that he had one? they were quick to show video of brown in the store as a robbery right? why not a report on this? in either case, 6 times in his BACK? both brown and meyers would be alive today if these “cops” had left them alone to mind their own damn business. nothing criminal about walking down the street, well unless you’re a black male apparently.

              The Ferguson and Shaw cases are very disparate. Mike Brown wasn’t violating his house arrest while illegally in possession of a weapon.

            It’s a given. – but – by state and federal laws, felony crimes have been committed in the releasing of information that would normally be withheld were it to have favored the victim. Like you and others, I have zero faith in closed court hearings that have leaky outlets to benefit the actions of government personnel.
            One reason I voted NO for the NC proposed Constitutional Amendment to forgo trial by jury for felony crimes that don’t include the death penalty as punishment as proposed by the NC Republican Legislature, no doubt to be approved by the NC Republican Governor and ‘dutifully and proudly’ exploited by the NC Republican Courts. (something LYING Tommie T. was actively involved in as a ‘cost cutting’ measure for State Government).
            What a way to save tax dollars – just do away with Constitutional Rights – und let ze Republican Religious Reich RULE!
            VIVA RESISTANCE! in NC too!

          The ONLY conclusion from the autopsy was that Mike Brown sustained a wound to his thumb at close range. It doesn’t say how. Was he grabbing for the gun? Did the gun discharge during the struggle at the window?

          But MORE importantly, the autopsy does NOT say why Mike Brown was shot several times after running away from the car. It does NOT say ANYTHING about Mike Brown “charging” Wilson. As far as the 8 witnesses, Mike Brown was NOT charging but had already been shot and had his hands up.

            Brown’s blood was found on the officer’s uniform and inside his police car, law enforcement sources told CNN this week. Those sources corroborated details first reported by The New York Times.

            At least one of the wounds Brown suffered is consistent with a struggle and appeared to have been inflicted at close range, according to a different source with firsthand knowledge of the investigation.

            “That tends to support any testimony that there was some kind of scuffle in the police car,” CNN legal analyst Danny Cevallos said. “And if so, that tends to support Officer Wilson’s testimony and his justification for using deadly force.”

            But Cevallos said the details about Brown’s blood on the officer’s gun and on his uniform might only go so far in helping the officer’s case.

            “Ultimately, that officer will have to come up with justification not for firing his gun the first time, but for each and every bullet that came out of his firearm — whether at the car or away from the car,” he said.

            Brown’s death is the subject of two inquiries: one by a St. Louis County grand jury considering whether Wilson should be charged, and the other by federal investigators looking into whether any civil rights violations occurred.

              “But Cevallos said the details about Brown’s blood on the officer’s gun and on his uniform might only go so far in helping the officer’s case.” i don’t trust anything he says as written in stone. he’s always on the side of the police and he’s always been biased in my opinion. no matter what the circumstances. and i definitely don’t hold any faith in this “grand jury.”

      Yet a guy with an assault rifle, after having set garbage bins ablaze, unloads facing at cops who never return fire. He was apprehended.

        Yep. They were better cops at playing the waiting game (they weren’t playing the chasing game). Doesn’t mean either situation wasn’t “by the book.”
