Forensics: Teen Shot By St. Louis Cop Had Gunshot Residue On Hands

On October 8, an off-duty police officer shot 18-year-old Vonderrick Myers, sparking off a wave of violent protests in the Shaw Neighborhood of St. Louis when initial witness reports claimed Myers was unarmed.

In an area still fraught with tension over the unresolved case of the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, citizens were already on edge, despite the officer’s claim that he had been shot at three times by Myers before returning fire.

Last night the Missouri State Highway Patrol released the results of testing that confirmed Myers had gunpowder residue on his hands, his t-shirt, and inside his waistband.

Per the L.A. Times, “Individuals shot at close range can have gunshot residue deposited on to their hands,” the statement said. “The presence of gunshot residue on the jeans and shirt could be from being in the environment of a discharged weapon or coming in contact with an object with gunshot residue on it.”

On the day of the shooting, Myers was under house arrest and was wearing an ankle bracelet.
