Teen: I Was Kicked Out Of Christian School For Being Gay

A Washington teenager claims she was kicked out of her private Christian school after coming out as gay. The teen’ mother, a teacher at the school, has resigned and is now working elsewhere.

17-year-old Megan Staker attended Bremerton’s Crosspoint Academy for three years and even though she expressed her support for gay rights several times, she never disclosed that she is gay.

According to KOMO News, it was a week before the school year started that Staker wrote a Facebook post in which she came out as gay.

“I can’t hide anymore, so here it is: I’m a lesbian,” she wrote.

It wasn’t even an hour later that the principal of the school called to say he had received several phone calls from angry parents who had seen the Facebook post, and Staker said she was told she could no longer attend the school.

“I was angry. But my initial reaction was surprise and disappointment,” she said.

Staker’s mother spoke with another administrator the next day and he allegedly said Staker was being asked to leave because of “behavior problems,” not because she’s a lesbian.

The family perceived the school’s actions to be discriminatory  and took Saker out of the school.

“I believe it was because I came out as a lesbian,” Staker said.

When questioned as to whether the school has a policy against allowing gay and lesbian students or staff, the principal Nick Sweeny said, “I don’t believe we have a policy on that yet.”

“I just wish that the parents there had thought about what they were doing and realized that maybe having their children exposed to someone like me isn’t as horrible as they thought it was,” Staker said.

Staker said she has no regrets over coming out and has enrolled in a non-Christian private school.

IKR? We can’t have gays and lesbians getting an education. Those ‘educators’ sure showed her.

This is why I frown on religion so much. As much as Christians try to equate their beliefs with love, many go out of their way express their bigotry for what their beliefs espouse. This teen is one brave girl, but she should have never felt humiliated or apart from a sect that professes forgiveness and unconditional love.
