Every day, on average, seven children were shot dead.
A News21 investigation of child and youth deaths in America between 2002 and 2012 found that at least 28,000 children and teens 19-years-old and younger were killed with guns. Teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19 made up over two-thirds of all youth gun deaths in America.
The News21 findings are compiled in the most complete database to date from records obtained from 49 state health departments and FBI Supplementary Homicide Reports…
Most of those killed by firearms, 62 percent, were murdered and the majority of victims were black children and teens. Suicides resulted in 25 percent of the firearm deaths of young people: The majority of them were white. More than 1,100 children and teens were killed by a gun that accidentally discharged.

21,000 children die everyday world wide. That’s 1 every 4 seconds. No death is acceptable. The great majority of these deaths are from poverty, hunger, and diseases. Most of these deaths are preventable. Gun deaths are a fraction of an even smaller fraction of that number and yet consume almost all the media coverage. I am not saying we should have less stories about children being killed by guns. I just think we need more stories about the thousands of easily preventable ways children are killed everyday.

Not to sound defeatist but it’s a fact of life that there will always be too much pain and suffering in the world. Most of humanity will struggle from the time they are born till the day they die. If you’re one of the lucky lottery winners to be born in a 1st world country be thankful for that blessing and try the best you can to right injustice when you see it, Take nothing for granted. And share what you can with those who have the least.

You don’t sound defeatist at all. You sound arrogant. We have a lot of poverty and death right here in our own country. What makes it worse is that we are in a better position to do something about it, but we don’t.

Ed brings up an important, but delicate fact that few care to acknowledge. If we are native born U.S. citizens, we did win the lottery. If you are also a white male, that’s the Powerball, too! I don’t disagree with the rest of your post, we are in a better position, and too often, we don’t do anything to ease the burden of our fellow citizens who need our help.

I agree with what you said… I would only add, if you are born into the “underclass” it often doesn’t make much difference what color you are.. you would be subjected to the predatory behavior of law enforcement, and demonized by the rich… and frankly, some of the “middle class” avoid making eye contact with you also. In SOME ways it’s becoming more of a “class” thing and less about “color” (I don’t want to minimize the racist problem, I’m just adding to the picture as a whole) Now that I’m no longer making sense… I’ll leave off here ;)

Yes, but it rolls downhill, like other things. Suburban whites have urban minorities to feel better about. Poor rural whites have poor rural blacks. And, so on, and so on.

Gang bangers? Accidental shootings? Any sane person should be able to see through this pitiful attempt to pull at people’s heart strings. So how about it folks, can any of you come up with the real truth about all these “children’s” deaths by firearms?

The real truth? It probably involves poverty brought on by the elite .1% hoarding the wealth and being greedy. Poor people are desperate and sometimes do stupid things. If there was a better way to give everybody a good shot at being productive in life and contributing to society in a meaningful way, there probably wouldn’t be the number of deaths that we see. At some point, humanity will hopefully figure out a way to keep the select few from hoarding so much wealth and hurting society. Until then we will suffer the consequences of having an inferior government that shows favoritism for some and lets others get beaten down by circumstance.
