Nail Polish Invented by College Students That Detects Date-Rape Drugs

Undergrads at North Carolina State University have come up with nail polish that supposedly can detect date rape drugs in drinks by changing color.

So far, few details have been announced about the product, which a spokesperson tells the Triangle Business Journal is “in the R&D stage.” It got an early boost by winning a university entrepreneurship challenge called the Lulu eGames and from an early investor who contributed $100,000, the business journal reports.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the most frequently cited drugs used to incapacitate sexual assault victims are rohypnol (illegal in the U.S.), GHB (legal as a narcolepsy treatment) and ketamine (legal as an anesthetic for humans and animals).

So, it’s reasonable to guess that the Undercover Colors team is trying to develop a product that will react to those three drugs, possibly along with ecstasy (MDMA).

Outstanding invention, but who to Blame, your blind date or someone else in the room as you went to powder up??? Hmmm I am guessing the waiter in the Library….

I don’t think it’s about assigning blame but simply giving women a tool.

I agree, I was just curious of a woman’s reaction when her nail polish does change colors, what would yours be, especially if you were in a large room of people and had stepped away from your drink???

I’m sure it would frighten me terribly. I tend to be immobilized by fear in these situations, but it would still be better than the alternative. I think young women these days are far more sophisticated and would be able to extricate themselves and find a safe alternate way to get home.

I think you are correct, and as mentioned, a ‘Tool’ may it be used Wisely, have you folks ever thought of an Entertainment section here??? This may be Flagged but I will share this with you, I posted it last night and think you may enjoy… =) http://nonlinearresonance.com/currents/index.php?topic=3468.msg19744#msg19744

It is interesting that questions like this don’t come up about other violent crimes. I mean if somebody gets mugged and buys some mace you don’t here questions like this. Is rape no longer considered a violent crime? Did I miss something?

My reaction? I’d pitch the drink and hit the road, leaving that bar behind!

Much better than waking up in an alley somewhere after being raped.

Well George Will won’t be investing in this idea. The current narrative, that rape somehow gives women a ‘coveted status’ and a woman in a bar is asking to be raped just by not sitting at home and watching 700 Club will be destroyed if there is a market for something that will prevent them from being raped. Someday maybe the idea that women just want to go out for drinks once in a while might take hold. Chaos will ensue. Blaming the victim might even become a thing of the past. Rape might even . . . gasp . . . be considered a crime of violence! What then?

Maybe I’ll have to eat these words someday, but still, I am so smelling tuna here.

It is simply not the case, as the hed claims, that this is a thing, as students cagily remind us that it is still in the R&D stage (i.e., doesn’t exist) and no further details are forthcoming (i.e., doesn’t exist).

Great hoax, or great scam, I dunno, but jeez, am I really the only person who notes a lack of demonstrative evidence that such a thing exists?

Actually in the last 3 days the research has been picked up by several cosmetic companies and has launched a bit of a bubble bidding war. The press on the internet has led to an actual public demand for the product. I know, capitalism. It’s so weird.
