UPDATE:  The FAA has temporarily halted all flights to Tel Aviv:

The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a 24-hour ban on flights to and from the Tel Aviv airport.

“The notice was issued in response to a rocket strike which landed approximately one mile from Ben Gurion International Airport on the morning of July 22, 2014,” the FAA said in a statement.

Delta Air Lines is cancelling all flights to and from Israel until further notice after a rocket reportedly landed near Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport.  A Delta Boeing 747 from New York was headed to the airport Tuesday, but was diverted to Paris for safety measures.

U.S. Airways has relocated planes held at Ben-Gurion airport and cancelled tonight’s planned flight.  With violence breaking out in the region and news of last week’s Malaysia Airlines jet fresh in their minds, these two airlines are responding by suspending service indefinitely.

This will probably cause Israel to step up its campaign against Hamas.

This is a mess. And it has huge repercussions for a lot of American Jewish families. During the summertime, many families and children go to Israel for school trips and for teen trips to Israel to learn about their culture and have some fun touring Israel and meeting Israeli kids.
These kids are trapped now in Israel – being moved about the country with their chaperones trying to keep these kids safe until they can return home. Initially it was thought they could get out and get home through Egypt but the border is now closed. They cannot get to the airport because Hamas threatened to bomb buses- and now there are no flights.
These are all American kids, US citizens. Parents are frantic – granddaughter’s best friend has been trapped for 2 weeks on lockdown in a hotel then in a bomb shelter. Granddaughter was supposed to be on the trip but cancelled a couple of months ago.
But they are trying to stay in contact with “T” … who more than anything wants to come home.
