MH17: Evidence Against Russia, Separatists Grows
- Pro-Russian militants allegedly discussed the receipt of Buk missile systems just days before — On July 14, a pro-Russian militant and a man identified as “Oreon,” an intelligence officer with Russia, allegedly talk about taking down planes with Buk missile systems, according to audio released by Ukraine’s security service. “Excellent. They [militants in rebel territory proclaimed as Donetsk People’s Republic] are avenging for planes today, but we have a couple of days more,” Oreon allegedly says. “We already have Buk, we’ll be shooting down them to hell.”
- Video posted online shows a Buk missile launcher traveling through the rebel-held town of Snizhne — The Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs released a video it described as a Buk missile system being transported in eastern Ukraine near the Russian border. … But another video posted to YouTube on July 17 is much more revealing. It was described as showing a Buk traveling near Snizhne, a rebel-controlled area southeast of the MH17 crash site. …
- The Buk is a highly sophisticated system that requires specialized training to operate — … According to IHS Jane’s Defense, a resource for intelligence and defense analysis, operating a Buk requires a trained crew. While the government of Ukraine also has Buk missile systems, Jane’s notes that the Ukrainian military has none of the systems in the region near the MH17 crash, as they were overtaken by pro-Russian separatists. “The system is not a simple system to use.” …
- The pro-Russian separatist leader boasted on social media of downing an aircraft shortly after MH17 went down — Posting on VKontakte, Russia’s version of Facebook, the pro-Russian leader Igor Strelkov wrote that “we have warned them — not to fly ‘in our sky.'” Strelkov, a Russian citizen who is linked to Russian intelligence, said an AN-26 (a Ukrainian military transport) had been shot down, apparently not realizing MH17 was a civilian airliner. …
- Pro-Russian militants were reportedly caught on an audio recording talking about shooting down a military transport before realizing they had likely downed a civilian plane …
- Militants have allegedly tried to destroy evidence and block investigators and reporters from the crash site — … [M]ilitants blocked observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe from going to the crash site, at one point even firing a warning shot, Spencer Ackerman reports in The Guardian. “The assumption is they’re trying to remove evidence of what they did,” a senior U.S. official briefed on the latest intelligence told The Wall Street Journal on Saturday.
And, in a report published late Saturday by The New York Times, Ukraine says it has proof that Russia supplied the BUK system that downed MH17:
The Ukrainian government said on Saturday that it had proof that Russia had provided the surface-to-air missile system that shot down a Malaysia Airlines passenger jet over eastern Ukraine on Thursday, killing all 298 people aboard.
That claim came as officials from Malaysia and the Netherlands pleaded for politics to be put aside so they could recover their dead, still lying in a field in a war zone.
Ukraine also accused Russia and separatist rebels in the east of trying to cover up their role by blocking recovery workers from the crash site, removing evidence and driving three missile launchers back to Russia just hours after the crash.
At a news conference in Kiev, Vitaly Nayda, the head of counterintelligence for the Ukrainian State Security Service, displayed photographs that he said showed the three Buk-M1 missile systems on the road to the Russian border. Two of the devices, missile launchers mounted on armored vehicles, crossed the border into Russia about 2 a.m. Friday, or less than 10 hours after the jet, Flight 17, was blown apart in midair, he said. The third weapon crossed about 4 a.m.

The UN going in is one thing, no way a NATO unit is going to be able to go in there, especially since the Ukraine isn’t a member and Russia doesn’t want anymore NATO members on its border. Still though, this whole thing is a mess.

A showdown looms. RT (state sponsored) now at about the same level of credibility as the US House, nonetheless reports, as of 03:35GMT:
“Kiev armed forces are concentrating on Donetsk’s western borders preparing for an assault on the city, representative of DPR self-defense forces told RIA Novosti.
“The representative also told the agency that despite a temporary truce over the MH17 flight incident, the fighting continues to the south of the city, as well as other areas. He said the anti-Kiev forces also engaged in fighting near Donetsk airport where there is a large concentration of Kiev forces.
“The representative added that villages surrounding the airport suffered civilian loses, as Ukrainian tanks and four Grad rockets shelled the villages of Peski, Tonenkoe, and Andreevka. After the shelling, Ukrainian forces took the communities of Severnoe and Tonenkoe by deploying four tanks in each of the villages.”

Maybe after they have had a chance to plant evidence that makes it look like NATO was trying to assassinate Putin?
