NY Fatal Chokehold Cop Stripped Of Gun, Badge
A New York City police officer involved in the arrest of a man who died in custody after being placed in an apparent chokehold has been stripped of his gun and badge and placed on desk duty, police said Saturday.
Officer Daniel Pantaleo, an eight-year NYPD veteran, and an officer who has been with the force for four years were both taken off the street after the death Thursday of 43-year-old Eric Garner on Staten Island, police said. The department would not identify the second officer but said he would retain his gun and badge while on desk duty. The reassignment is effective immediately and will remain in effect while Garner’s death is being investigated, police said.
The president of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, the city’s largest police union, called Pantaleo’s reassignment a “completely unwarranted, knee-jerk reaction.”
The decision, Patrick Lynch said in a statement, “effectively pre-judges” the case and denies Pantaleo the “very benefit of a doubt that has long been part of the social contract that allows police officers to face the risks of this difficult and complex job.”
Pantaleo did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment.
And it seems that Pantaleo has been to court before over allegations of of abusive behavior, with the court ruling against him:
Click here for reuse options!Pantaleo has been accused of false arrest and violating police procedures in two lawsuits, court records show. In one, two African-American plaintiffs won $15,000 apiece after claiming they’d been falsely arrested on Staten Island in 2012 and forced to publicly strip so cops could search them. All charges against them were dropped.

You do realize Serpico, at great risk to his life, including being set up to be shot, exposed a force that was/is almost totally corrupt. How in any possible definition is that ‘better?’

Too damn bad that this cop wasn’t chocked to death like he did to this man.
If that were to happen then the Police may become polite and civil again.

Violence begets violence. It’s not the answer.

Seriously? If someone had choked the officer to death, it would have given the force an excuse to be even more aggressive under the guise of protecting themselves, not to mention overshadowing the tragic death of Mr. Garner.

Yeah, we get it, troll. You attempt to solicit a response from any of the liberal commenters here which agrees, and then in response you get to crow that liberals are intolerant and thug-like, duh.
Duly noted, as is the ham-handedness of your attempt.

Every single cop who were even close to that incident should have their badges taken. The minute that poor man said he could not breathe every single one of those cops were responsible to take actions to stop the choke hold.

I am so disturbed by this brutality. I’ve seen such a use of power far worse than Rodney King lately. I know people who have been charged as guilty and pushed around by over zealous cops who probably have serious ego problems. The chips on their shoulders are enormous.

Totally disgusting action by this cop. This so called “officer of the law” should be prosecuted and sentenced to at least 20 years in prison and the other cops who were there should be fired for not stopping the murderous cop…

If this is the third violation he should have been fired immediately, clearly he is a liability to the force.

I think we should abolish the police departments, and the military. The world would be better off without these bastions of violence. Peaceful people are being harassed and beaten and murdered by these thugs. ABOLISH THE POLICE NOW!!!!
