Blues Legend Johnny Winter Dies At 70

There is no word yet on the cause of death.

Winter was a leading light among the white blues guitar players, including Eric Clapton and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, who followed in the footsteps of the earlier Chicago blues masters. Winter idolized Waters — and got a chance to produce some of the blues legend’s more popular albums. Rolling Stone magazine named Winter one of the top 100 guitarists of all time.

His representative, Carla Parisi, confirmed Thursday that Winter died in a hotel room in Zurich a day earlier. The statement said his wife, family and bandmates were all saddened by the loss of one of the world’s finest guitarists.

RIP Johnny, one of the best blues guitarist I’ve ever seen. I saw him and Muddy Waters in 1975, it was awesome.

I’m truly saddened. I’ll have to have a Johnny Winterspalooza for the next 24 hours. Fortunately, I’ve got the recordings to do it.

My late brother introduced me to the music of Johnny Winter back in the early 70s. I absolutely worshipped him. I believe I have every album he ever recorded – over 25 of them. To call him one of the top 100 guitarists of all time is a bit of an understatement in my opinion he was easily in the top 10 and I think other musicians would feel the same. Let’s remember him the way he should be remembered – at the top of his game:

Terrible, terrible news. Last time I saw him was on some late-night show – mebbe Letterman. Winter was typically incendiary, but when he sat down to talk to the host he was speeding so much on something or other he wasn’t very coherent.
A tremendous talent, he will be missed…..
