Pat Buchanan Defends Richard Nixon’s Southern Strategy

Posted by | July 9, 2014 08:07 | Filed under: Politics Radio Interviews Top Stories

Patrick J. Buchanan appeared on my radio show Tuesday night to discuss is book on Richard Nixon, The Greatest Comeback. He downplayed the notion that the Southern Strategy as about race, and pointed a finger at the Democratic Party of the ’50’s and ’60’s for its own racial biases.

He also discussed how he met Nixon, what he was like when the cameras were off, and what he thinks the Republican Party needs to do now as we head toward 2016.

    Nixon? Seriously?
That sound you hear is a collective groan from the RNC, wishing that Pat “It’s a White Man’s World” would just STFU.

Buchanan is either in denial or is outright lying. In addition he trots out the completely illogical right wing talking point that somehow the Democratic party as it existed 50 years ago is comparable to the Democratic party of today.

I am so sick of the dishonesty of the right wing as they add insult to injury by assuming we are as stupid as their base, unable to educate ourselves on the facts.

The late GOP strategist Lee Atwater made it very clear that the Southern strategy is most definitely about race. Stop lying Pat.

For all you “skewed poll” fans, ready to dismiss my source as “liberal”. The link is to an audio recording of Mr. Atwater making it crystal clear that the Southern strategy was about race. So save your spin and rationalization. When it comes to who I am going to believe, disingenuous lame excuses in an internet forum, or my own lying ears as I listen to the man who invented the southern Strategy, it is not much of a contest.

You start out in 1954 by saying, “N*er, n*er, n*er.” By 1968 you can’t say “n*er”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “N*er, n*er.”
