The Last Time The Economy Had News This Good Was When Bill Clinton Was President

While Republicans are suing Obama for being a president, the economy is improving, and even at a better than expected pace. I’m pretty sure Republicans will call for impeachment when this good news hits their desk. The last time the economy added this many jobs consistently, was in 1999 when Bill Clinton was President.

While Congress has consistently been unproductive, this happened without their help:

The American jobs recovery seems to have finally hit its stride. The U.S. economy added 288,000 jobs in June, marking the fifth straight month where employers added at least 200,000 jobs. The last time that happened was in late 1999, as the dot-com bubble was inflating.

Economists surveyed by CNNMoney had predicted that 200,000 jobs were added last month, Meanwhile, the unemployment rate is now 6.1%, down from 6.3% in May. Economists were expecting the unemployment rate to stay at 6.3%.

Another sign of good news for those who currently have jobs is that pay is on the rise. Hourly wages ticked up 0.2% in June and are up 2% in the past 12 months. Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellen has mentioned concern that wages aren’t growing as rapidly as needed.

This time, they won’t blame Obama. After George W. Bush plunged our economy into an apocalyptic abyss, somehow, some way, Republicans will now take credit for its recovery.  Count on it.

Meanwhile, I just received an email from Reince Priebus asking people to sign George W. Bush’s birthday card.

    And we know where the economy would be, had the party of “No” passed a jobs bill and massive infrastructure spending?? The unemployment rate would be at or below 5%. Of course the GOP doesn’t want to do that, knowing full well the jobs created from that spending would actually take down the deficit more because of the huge offset in federal revenue increases. And to think they do this purely out of spite for “The Man”.

      Repairing the damage done by George and his frat boy politics was never the goal of the GOP. Their goal was to resist every effort to help the country. If that meant driving the nation into a ditch, they were perfectly ok with that as long as it made the black guy look bad.

    Ok, our economic numbers look good but this recovery is all mythology. Jobs are being created, but there are still not enough jobs that pay living wages. The unemployment numbers don’t tell the real story. Millions are discouraged and no longer actively looking for work, but their number is no longer counted as unemployed. The number also doesn’t show the millions that are underemployed. Also, stock market means relatively nothing to the average citizen. The middle class has yet to feel any recovery. Granted, Obama did a lot to fix the huge mess Bush created, but too much damage was already done. Our current state is beyond recovery. I can’t wait to see how the numbers change moving forward since the Fed’s quantitative easing programs are drawing to a close.

    Our economy only looks like it is improving, but the fact is, (this is what I took away from the Dow and stock market numbers, anyway) that the gap between the haves and have-nots, that inequality gap, keeps growing. Until that is closed, or is closing, this recovery is mere myth. I still can’t find a job making what I made a decade ago when I was fresh out of high school, even though I have a college degree now. I work for about 20% less but work 20% harder to pay off my student loans. I do not feel this recovery.

      I’m sorry for your recent struggles, and I do hope you are able to get into something, earning what you are worth instead of what you have to accept.

    WHAT recovery? Millions of longtime unemployed have given up looking for work and are no longer counted in the unemploymetn figures. The majority of these long-term unemployed are people over 55 years of age whom most employers consider too “over the hill” to rehire full-time. I’m 61 and just months away from having to file for early retirement, because no one, it seems, is willing to hire me full-time because I’m “too old.”

    The dirty secret of this so-called “recovery” is tht there are millions of Baby Boomers now in their 60s who are being forced to retire early. Age discrimination against older Americans is runnning rampant in our economy, as companies push out older workers in favor of younger workers who are paid lower wages. And for those fortunate enough to still be working, their incomes have remained stagnant for five years now — or worse, have actually shrunk.

    And while the middle class is getting squeezed out of existence, the rich are getting richer and the already-poor are getting poorer.
