Stop Marketing Birth Control Pills As Contraceptives!
Hey, the Supreme Court says that some privately-held corporations don’t have to follow parts of federal law they don’t like. So, they don’t have to require their insurance to pay for a woman’s contraception.
I don’t have a fundamental disagreement with that. I don’t think insurance companies should be forced to pay for condoms, either. I don’t believe a private company should be forced by the government to purchase insurance that covers medically-unnecessary pharmaceuticals of any sort.
“Boner pills,” for instance. Why should insurance companies pay for those? Is a “boner” medically necessary? After all, if pregnancy is the desired result of sex, a man’s sperm can easily be produced without an erection by the skillful manipulation of his prostate by a medical professional. If a person is going to get his prostate checked for cancer anyway, why not ask the doc to pump out a jug or two of the male’s contribution to conception as long as he’s in there anyway? No erection necessary! Take the gunk to the fertility clinic, grab a couple of the wanna-be mommy’s eggs, and bango! Science!
Condoms are not medically necessary either. If you don’t want to get pregnant, don’t have sex. Sex is not a medical necessity.
However…
Some smart pharmaceutical company MUST have figured this out by now (or else, they can send me a check and I will split it with Alan).
There are medical uses for oral contraceptives that have nothing to do with contraception!
We trust WebMD, right? Here’s what they say!
The Pill isn’t just for birth control: Did you know that it can also protect against certain life-threatening cancers, plus help relieve some painful period symptoms? Here, experts explain the top seven health benefits of taking the Pill and how to make them work for you.
Those seven non “embry-no” reasons?
1. Lower risk of certain cancers.
2. Clearer skin.
3. Shorter, lighter and less painful periods.
4. Relief from Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS).
5. Relief from endometriosis, a condition in which uterine-lining tissue grows in other pelvic areas, can lead to scarring, severe pain, and sometimes infertility.
6. Fewer periods. Who wouldn’t like that, eh?
7. Relief from the symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. It’s not a cure, but doctors recommend that women with PCOS take a pill with 30 to 35 mcg of estrogen, since estrogen helps regulate periods, and combats skin problems and unwanted hair growth.
So, just stop marketing the pills as contraceptives! Market them as medically-necessary, cancer-risk-reducing, skin-clearing, period-shortening, PMS-relieving, no more endometrosis pills that treat the symptoms of PCOS.
List contraception as a side-effect, but don’t say it like that! Say, “Women who want to get pregnant should not take ‘Zygoban’.”
Then, have the drug added to the medical formulary as a necessary medication for certain women that must be covered by insurance under Obamacare.
Boom. Problem solved.
Make that check out to William M. Schmalfeldt. And thank you.

I’m more a fan of mass vasectomies – especially for the extreme right loonies in the usa.

I’m beginning to feel that way. But of course, they will next attack sterilization while promoting vasectomies for guys.
This is a class war against women.

Where in the Bible does Jesus say anything about wearing a condom?

Hey, the SCOTUS ruled that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act — written by Ted Kennedy, introduced by Chuck Schumer, and signed into law by Bill Clinton — was actually a thing.
So, thanks Democrats!
BanditBasheert June 30th, 2014 at 13:34
SCOTUS is a bunch of freaks who are simply attempting to kill off lower income women while paying for Boner meds for Christian freaky old white men.
The bible never mentions birth control – and in fact there were methods available to limit childbirth.
This isn’t about religion. It’s about forcing people to confirm to a social standard set by people we don’t agree with, and a religion we do not conform to.
It is simply Christian Sharia Law.
It’s bullying .. by old white men.
I don’t care that you use Viagra – why is it your business if I use birth control?
R.J. Carter June 30th, 2014 at 13:38
Is it your opinion that if you work at Hobby Lobby, the company-provided insurance does not provide birth control?
BanditBasheert June 30th, 2014 at 13:42
Not at all. They do provide birth control – they just pick and choose (something many insurance companies also do). But birth control is prescribed for many differing reasons.
I don’t understand what this has to do with religious freedom? It’s truly a health issue. Aren’t health issues between people and their physicians?
They also decided that Plan B and an IUD was an abortifacient. I don’t not believe that is accurate. If I am correct, then their own rationale is a lie.
And why is Hobby Lobby peeking into people’s vaginas anyway? We are all entitled to privacy with health care.
Corporations do not believe in Sky Guy. PEOPLE believe in sky guy. I don’t force my beliefs on you. Why do you think it’s ok to force your beliefs on others?
R.J. Carter June 30th, 2014 at 13:46
I actually do not believe they should be involved with health care in the first place. I’d much rather they quit providing the benefit, give the money spent to the employees as earnings, and let them buy their own health insurance on the exchange. Controversy solved.
By the way, health insurers pick and choose their “boner meds” also. You might not be able to get Cialis if the plan pays for Viagra, even if Viagra causes painful side effects to you and Cialis doesn’t.
HL pays for 22 different kinds of birth control. They do not pay for 4, and of those 4, one can be bought cheaply without insurance.
BanditBasheert June 30th, 2014 at 13:54
But Plan B is NOT an abortifacient (that is their fallback). And IUD’s are used for a variety of medical reasons. Their reasoning is wrong. Medical matters should be determined by physicians, not by employers.
I agree with you – as far as obtaining insurance via the Exchanges. Employers should not be meddling in insurance matters of any kind. Nor health care.
As far as Cialis and Viagra – it is preferential. For men. And the guys who are taking boner medications aren’t doing it for biblical reasons or to reproduce. It’s strictly for male pleasure. Most Cialis/Viagra users are OLD ..

I like the hub-and-spoke model. The individual is the hub. The spokes are all of the organizations the individual deals with (i.e. church, state, employer, healthcare providers, charities, businesses). Money flows from the employer to the individual. From there it flows to wherever the individual chooses. The individual has maximum control over his or her money, and each organization can concentrate on doing what it does best. I do not want my employer limiting my choices to a couple of healthcare plans. Just give me the money and let me choose how and where to spend it.

Because the government was stopped from infringing on one person’s religious beliefs. It’s the whole “First they came for…” logic.

Oh that makes perfect sense.
You’re happy because you agree with it – that’s all.
This isn’t about religion. It’s about forcing other people to believe in your religion and it’s tenets.
Not going to happen.
You cannot force a Sharia belief system off on other people RJ. You think you are right. I think you are wrong.
This targets people who need medical care. And it puts an employer in charge of determining that care.
Wrong Wrong Wrong.
R.J. Carter June 30th, 2014 at 14:05
Where did I say any of what you just said?
Hobby Lobby Case: I am happy. I do agree with it.
Roe v. Wade: You are happy. You do agree with it.
Both are the law of the land, and we both have to reconcile ourselves to it.
But nowhere do I say anyone has to conform to a belief. What I did say was that someone couldn’t be forced to act contrary to their belief.
BanditBasheert June 30th, 2014 at 14:10
Why do you immediately jump to Roe v Wade?
This was about an employer corporation making a decision for an employee based upon the employer’s belief. There is no room for an employee’s belief.
How is an employer denying health care to an employee “restoring religious freedom”? Especially health care that is legally prescribed by a physician?
But this is about paying for it. That’s all this is about. And making sure to NOT give an employee the choice of a plan that would cover the service they dont approve of. At the heart of this, it is above Hobby Lobby APPROVAL and DISAPPROVAL. Regardless of medical necessity. Even though it is the employee who pays for the insurance.
I’d personally just go find another job. There are many retail stores that don’t play manipulative games.
R.J. Carter June 30th, 2014 at 14:14
“Why do you immediately jump to Roe v Wade? ”
Why not? Is there another SCOTUS ruling you agree with more that I might disagree with fundamentally? The point was that there are decisions you will like, and decisions I will like, and there will be those decisions where we will be on opposite sides philosophically and constitutionally.
I agree with the summation: there are other retail jobs out there.
BanditBasheert June 30th, 2014 at 14:26
I believe a person’s medical care is no one’s business other than their own and their physician. We all have different beliefs, different ideas.
I would never presume to tell someone that what they medically chose to do via consultation with their physician was wrong.
Philosophically and constitutionally?

Mirena for example – is inserted by a physician and works for 5 years. It is easily inserted right after labor and delivery. There are many indications for why women should not become pregnant – and none of them concern their employer.

The Supremes are stupid. As you say, there are multiple uses for contraceptives which have nothing to do with contraception. The ruling from SCOTUS deals with Plan B (emergency contraception), Ella and the IUD. It does not deal with contraception such a oral birth control pills (at least nothing I am seeing indicates that).
The Government should contract with the companies that produce these medications and make them available via any drug store with a prescription, at one cost for all. In order to obtain birth control, women must visit a physician and obtain a prescription. That is still a covered service. Get the prescription and PAY FOR IT.
As far as Plan B(the emergency one) – is that not over the counter and available from a pharmacist? Pay for it yourself.
The IUD is another issue. Did this ruling involve IUD placement for women who have been told they should NOT get pregnant? In many cases the IUD is the “ideal” especially if they are talking a product like Mirena (good for 5 years but must be inserted by a physician). The cost is over $1000.
We should have access to birth control openly in this country.
It’s medically legal … and it should be available to anyone who wants it at a low cost. The government can FIX this easily.
A very small group of people are affected by this ruling. It shouldn’t be happening but maybe change can come about .. well when SCOTUS all dies that is.

Apparently the author didn’t bother to read the ruling. None of his arguments pertain to the case. Did you read the ruling? Any of it? What does and doesn’t Hobby Lobby provide for birth control? Do they specifically say they won’t provide some even if it’s medically necessary to treat a medical condition and not for terminating a pregnancy? I’m really tired of people on both sides if this issue shooting off their mouths without knowing the facts like the author here does.
BanditBasheert June 30th, 2014 at 14:28
If it is not a covered service in the terms of the insurance, medical necessity is not going to be allowed. If the policy doesn’t cover it, the insurance doesn’t pay.
Medical necessity is not taken into consideration for non covered services.
I think the author was onto something .. but was also being snarky.

BanditBasheert June 30th, 2014 at 15:41
Agree.
Unfortunately their reasoning is not based upon actual science. It’s what they “think” the medications do.
But the result is the same. If your insurance doesn’t cover the medication (that’s how they’ll do it), medical necessity isn’t going to matter. That’s why they did it this way.

Washington (CNN) – For the Greens, the Christian family behind the Hobby Lobby chain of stores, their battle with the Obama administration was never really about contraception. It was about abortion.

Bunya June 30th, 2014 at 20:22
No, it wasn’t ever about abortion. If it were, abortion, Roe v. Wade would have been overturned back when the republicans held office. Why do you think that didn’t happen? The GOP has nothing else to run on, so every election cycle, they dust off the ol’ abortion issue, procure the votes of the religious groups and, after they’re elected, throw that issue back in the closet, without touching it, for the next four years. It’s textbook logic.
Nope, this is a political move in an attempt to undermine this president. I like it though. I’m sure this will open the door for other business owners to impose their religious on THEIR employees. Maybe the next business owner to complain about religious freedom will be a Muslim.
Bob Waas July 1st, 2014 at 14:00
Of course it was about abortion. Hobby Lobby already provides for contraceptives for their employees. They objected to medications that would cause an abortion.
Hysterical women like Pelosi, Clinton, and Fluke are carrying the political message of the Democrats when they say it is a war on women.
I would like to know exactly what war the are talking about? And, how is Hobby Lobby attempting to undermine Obama when they are asking for 1st Amendment protection. This is what the founding fathers had in mind when they said the government would not impede the free exercise of ones religion. Or, as Thomas Jefferson wrote in his letter to the Danbury Baptists, there will be a “separation of church and state.”
He was assuring them that the people are protected “from” interference by the government on the church; not the other way around.
As for the GOP, they have lots to run on. Specifically, they can run on Obama’s lack of performance. His policies have done more harm than good to this country.
Bunya July 1st, 2014 at 17:00
Really!?! Gee, I wonder why contraceptive coverage became an issue NOW instead of back in 2000 under the Bush administration?
And it IS a war on women. Why do men get their Viagara covered but women can’t have their contraceptives covered? I thought the church teaching was all about sex being only for procreation. Why does an 80 year old guy need a boner? I would think he’d be way past the age of raising another child.
“I would like to know exactly what war the are talking about?”
Of course you don’t know what war we’re talking about. You’re way too concerned with the impending annual fictitious “war on Christmas” to be bothered with anything else.
“He was assuring them that the people are protected “from” interference by the government on the church”
Is Hobby Lobby part of the Catholic Church? If so, are they tax exempt?
“…they have lots to run on”.
The only thing the GOP depends on is votes from misogynists who are hell bent on limiting the rights of women. That’s it. And if Obama ran again, I guarantee he’d win in a landslide. As for his policies doing “more harm than good to this country” – I think you’re confusing his administration with the Dubya and Reagan administrations.
Bob Waas July 1st, 2014 at 18:38
No one is denying them their contraceptives. Did you read the ruling? It only pertains to those items which cause abortions; not those which prevent a pregnancy.
If the Dems were truly for women they would be for all women. They have shown time and again that they are only for liberal women; in fact, they get quite ugly against conservative women.
In the words of Obama, this is phony nonsense and there is not even a smidgen of a war on women. The conservative women aren’t out there protesting the ruling because they are generally anti abortion.
Bob Waas July 2nd, 2014 at 16:27
“And if Obama ran again, {I guarantee he’d win in a landslide.} As for his policies doing “more harm than good to this country” – I think you’re confusing his administration with the Dubya and Reagan administrations.”
A landslide, you’re in the minority with that kind of thinking.
The latest Quinnipiac University poll shows America is finally waking up to the fact that Obama is an empty suit; and worst, he recklessly wields his power in the most absurd anti-American ways.
Obama is known as a ‘Post Turtle’ You know, “when you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that’s a ‘post turtle”.
“You know he didn’t get up there by himself, he doesn’t belong up there, and he doesn’t know what to do while he’s up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put him up there to begin with”.
Bunya July 2nd, 2014 at 17:26

Yeah. I remember Fox predicting a Romney landslide win in the last election. Funny how that turned out.
“You know he didn’t get up there by himself, he doesn’t belong up there, and he doesn’t know what to do while he’s up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put him up there to begin with”.
Good Bob, but you’re confusing President Obama with Dubya. That describes him to a “T”. Dubya had help getting up there (he was appointed), he didn’t belong there (self explanatory), he didn’t know what to do once he was up there (except do what the GOP told him to do). And you just wonder what kind of dumbass put him up there in the first place (the supreme court).

In fact China FORCES people to have abortions
Hobby Lobby is not a Christian company
those people are Dominionists and supremacists
Oh btw if you think an egg not being fertilized is an abortion you are as ignorant about Science as you are about religion

Numbers 5:11-13
Bob Waas July 2nd, 2014 at 16:55
Nothing in Numbers 5: 11-13 speaks about abortion. In verses 21-22 God is prepared to curse a woman for being unfaithful to her husband. If she was unfaithful, then she would be punished by miscarrying the baby and would not be able to bear children after that. That is a consequence for disobedience and not abortion on demand.
Read these verses on the sanctity of life.
Deuteronomy 30:19–“Today I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose Life, so that you and your children may live.”
*that man was not a chance or a mere assemblage of cells, but that he was created in the image of God. Hence, the shedding of innocent blood was strictly forbidden (Genesis 9:6; Exodus 23:7, Prov. 6:16-17)

Andy, Wass feigns ‘Oldtimerz’ and never remembers: The Bible never once specifically forbids abortions; Not only were methods of abortion well-known at the time, there’s times when the Bible states God commands that one take place. A few examples:
1) ” Numbers 5, There aren’t witnesses to prove whether she did or did not have an affair. She is to be taken before the priest who will mix up a potion and have her swear an oath of cursing before drinking it. “And if the woman be not defiled, but be clean; then she shall be free, and shall conceive seed.” Otherwise, in poetic terms, it is described that she will lose the baby, by judgment of God.”
2) Causing a Miscarriage: Mere Property Loss
The latest push in the War on Women has been to declare that anyone who causes the loss of a pregnancy shall be guilty of murder. Not according to the Bible! “in Exodus 21:22-25: If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine” $5? OK. Summary: The Bible is Not Anti-Abortion. In conclusion Christian’s say that the Bible is not anti-abortion! “The Bible teaches us that Life Begins at the first breath”-But only ‘if the child survives for a considerable time outside the womb.’ http://rhrealitycheck.org/article/2012/06/03/biblical-abortion-christians-view-1/
“The Bible places no value on fetuses or infants less than one month old.
-And if it be from 1 month old even unto 5 years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male 5 shekels of silver, and for the female thy estimation shall be 3 shekels of silver. –Leviticus 27:6” http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/says_about/abortion.html ‘$00.00 biblical value on life until month old!—Leviticus 27:6.

Bunya July 2nd, 2014 at 10:09
Once again, why are they crying “religious rights” now? Why not back when the repubs were in office? This is nothing but a ploy by the Catholic church in an effort to show their displeasure that most Catholics voted for Obama.
If repubs were truly for women, they’d let them control their own bodies. Believe it or not, women ARE capable for making decisions for themselves. And in fact, conservatives get quite ugly against liberal women. Rememer Rush Limbaugh calling Sandra Fluk a “slut” and a “whore” because she wanted insurance companies to cover birth control?
And of course the conservative women aren’t out there protesting the ruling. They won. But don’t worry, you’ll find the slut shamers (formerly know as “pro-lifers”) hanging around Planned Parenthood, terrorising women in crisis.
Bunya July 2nd, 2014 at 17:26
”
A landslide, you’re in the minority with that kind of thinking.”
Bob Waas July 2nd, 2014 at 19:10
Obama is rated worst president in history and that is all you can say. Ha Ha. Bush only made it the 2nd worst.

In fact China FORCES people to have abortions
Hobby Lobby is not a Christian company
those people are Dominionists and supremacists
Oh btw if you think an egg not being fertilized is an abortion you are as ignorant about Science as you are about religion
P.S if you where such a Biblical Scholar you would know that in the book of numbers God gives Moses instructions on how to perform an abortion.
Bob Waas July 1st, 2014 at 23:34
Suddenly the SCOTUS got the decision wrong. Well I felt the same about Roe vs Wade and Obamacare, so join the club.

Products bearing “Made in China” labels are found all over the shelves at Hobby Lobby, evidence that some of its wares come from Chinese factories that have a reputation for labor rights violations and rock-bottom wages. Employees at these facilities often end up working grueling hours in prison-like conditions and never earn enough to escape poverty.

This is the real danger in the SCOTUS ruling regarding allowing religion to trump women’s rights:
The free men of America did not wait till usurped power had strengthened itself by exercise, and entangled the question in precedents. They saw all the consequences in the principle, and they avoided the consequences by denying the principle. We revere this lesson too much soon to forget it. Who does not see that the same authority which can establish Christianity, in exclusion of all other Religions, may establish with the same ease any particular sect of Christians, in exclusion of all other Sects? that the same authority which can force a citizen to contribute three pence only of his property for the support of any one establishment, may force him to conform to any other establishment in all cases whatsoever?
