U.S. Patent And Trademark Office Cancels Redskins Trademark

By cancelling the the ability to trademark the name “Redskins,” the U.S. Patent and Trademark office is pushing the team to change its name.

“We decide, based on the evidence properly before us, that these registrations must be cancelled because they were disparaging to Native Americans at the respective times they were registered,” the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board wrote in its opinion Wednesday.

The landmark ruling was filed on behalf of a group of Native Americans…

Redskins owner Dan Snyder has refused to change the team’s name, citing tradition, but there has been growing pressure including statements in recent months from President Barack Obama, lawmakers of both parties and civil rights groups.

The decision means that the team can continue to use the Redskins name, but it would lose a significant portion of its ability to protect the financial interests connected to its use. If others printed the name on sweatshirts, apparel, or other team material, it becomes more difficult to go after groups who use it without permission.

The case involves six registered trademarks that involve the use of the word Redskins, but it does not apply to the team’s logo.

They did this once before and it was overturned in the courts. A recent infomercial by an American Indian was saying who they are and at the end of the piece they said we don’t call ourselves “redskins.” There you are, how can they be offended if they’re not the targeted group who was honored by the football team when they chose the name?

Last I heard, the Washington Redskins were going to change their name. They’re going to drop the name Washington because it is an embarrassment to carry that name.

I want to know why they aren’t bellyaching about the logo for the MLB Tem Cleveland Indians??? That looks rather disparaging towards Native Americans!! I think Georgia ought to forbid baseball fans from doing the Tomahawk chop to cheer on the Braves!! (Ditto for FSU fans and KC chief fans) .. The Redskins aren’t overtly or otherwise trying to offend anyone, nor does anyone have any right to not be offended. Hell my existence as a conservative offends liberals everywhere, but they must get over it! The redskins have been around since like forever, originating in Boston, now its all of a sudden a problem?? Whats next folks, don’t like the direction the Mississippi flows in?

Good start! It is interesting that the group who argues against changing the name and honoring the requests and protests of Native Americans, while throwing more insults (“bellyaching”and such) at Native people for their desire to change the name, also happen to identify themselves as Republicans. Why are they so conditioned to be so disrespectful and bigoted of other cultures, races and religions and why are they continually so misinformed? Republicans weren’t always like that. At one time they stood strongly for civil rights! What happened to them that took them down to that horrible inhuman racist level?

Despite Right Wing opposition, I believe we have entered a time where Native American voices will no longer be ” marginalized or ignored”. Their voices are important! They are the roots upon this land we now call home. Without them, it will continue to be an unstable structure. The ” Dream” should never be a nightmare for so many!
