Tom Crist of Calgary did the unexpected.

Crist won the Lotto Max drawing in May but did not claim his fortune until this Monday. And he’s decided that every cent of the $40 million will go to a family foundation he founded and other charitable causes he supports. Charities that support cancer research and treatment will be included, Crist says, in honor of his wife who passed away two years ago from the disease.

Crist told reporters that he already led a good life and the money could be used better elsewhere, “I guess I’ve been fortunate enough through my career with the company to have a good living and look after my kids so I really don’t need the money.”
