Anthony Weiner: “I’m An Empty, Soulless Vessel”

Because he can’t stay out of the limelight to save his life, former Representative and failed New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner sits down this month with GQ Magazine to discuss the dark side of his psyche, and why it matters. To someone. Possibly his wife.

In an unusually candid exchange, Weiner drops the following bomb-let:

“One thing I’m grateful for is that now I’m under no obligation to answer anything like this,” he said. “But we’ve had a very rough time. It causes me a great deal of pain in the way she gets reported and the way she gets discussed. Her treatment in the press has been rough. It pains me because I deserve it. She doesn’t.

“I duck it as best I can,” he added, “but her reputation has become the Woman Who Married an Idiot and Stuck with Him. More of it rolls off my back, because that’s the way I am constitutionally. She’s more sensitive. I’m just an empty, soulless vessel, so it doesn’t hurt me as much.”

While Weiner’s raw honesty is weirdly admirable — quite apart from its implications — it’s also chilling in the context of self-regard and its nuances. Oftentimes a ravenous ego is best fed by self-flagellation; it centers all available attention on the subject, and that’s the sole objective, after all.

But where does it lead? If unbreastings like this don’t keep him in the public eye, to what extreme, what garish and unavoidable display, will he resort?

Not sure I want to think about that, just now.
