Boy Scouts welcome transgender boys and culture warriors freak out
It’s time for another high-dudgeon tantrum in the culture wars!
“Starting today,” the organization’s statement read, “we will accept and register youth in the Cub and Boy Scout programs based on the gender identity indicated on the application. Our organization’s local councils will help find units that can provide for the best interest of the child.”
The BSA noted that many states and municipalities now protect against discrimination on the basis of gender identity.… [R]eligious conservatives were upset by the change. Jonathan Keller, CEO of the California Family Council, was quick to tell ThinkProgress that he found the BSA’s decision “tragically sad.” Despite the proud legacy of Eagle Scouts in his family, he will now refuse to let his children participate in the organization alongside transgender boys.
Denny Burk, who has pioneered the Southern Baptist Convention’s condemnations of transgender people, also mourned the decision, regurgitating fake research rejecting trans identities from the conservative hate group the American College of Pediatricians (not to be confused with the legitimate American Academy of Pediatricians).
“I can’t help but grieve that the Boy Scouts are going along with this radical redefinition of what it means to be a boy,” Burk wrote. “They are making a big mistake in this, and it will be one that hurts not only their organization but also the very boys they wish to serve.”

One of the greatest value a boy can learn is acceptance.

And he won’t get it from Southern Baptists.

Martin Luther King and Ralph Abernathy were Southern Baptist ministers.
Andrew Young was a Southern Baptist.
not positive, but I think Roy Wilkins and James Farmer were Southern Baptists……
Jimmy Carter is a Southern Baptist and still teaches Sunday school, I think.
Bill Clinton is a Southern Baptist.

So this bigot Keller will deprive his kids of the experience of being Scouts because he thinks that will hurt the transgender kids. All he’s doing is hurting his own kids. Narrow-minded, short-sighted people.

These religious fanatics love to portray themselves as “tolerant” and “accepting”. Of course they do. That’s because they channel their hatred through their sky fairy. “I don’t hate gays, God does”. “I killed those doctors because God wanted me to”.
Y’see, that way the sky fairy takes the blame for their hatred.
.
Thank god it’s still illegal to kill people because of their sexual orientation, because I’m sure that if this country ever became a theocracy, you can bet the two clowns listed above will be the first to grab their shotguns and, “do the lord’s work”.

Thank you for not globalizing this to all Christians. I’m an Evangelical Christian and I don’t have a problem with the gays, trans or whomever.
I was raised to think it was wrong but, like most Americans, I educated myself and updated my opinion.
My own church welcomes LGBT folks at all levels, from visitors to leaders. As you can imagine, we have lots of them attending.
But, even so, very few trans people. Why? Because it’s relatively rare. Or it’s not obvious. This is why I can’t understand conservative fixation on transsexuals. They are a teeny percentage of the population. The reasonable thing is to just let them be.

Which is it today? The Boy Scouts can’t decide if they are a patriotic organization or a religious organization.
‘Course, if they were a religious organization, they couldn’t/shouldn’t claim the President of the United States as figurative leader. And they have no business using military armories and surplus materials.

But probably a majority of the troops are supported by, and held in, churches. So they tend to be as conservative as their sponsoring congregations.

Where I live are churches with large segments of their congregations are liberals, politically.
The Quakers, Unitarians, Jews and Southern Baptists around here come immediately to mind. I know several Buddhists and they’re all libruls.
The civil rights marches held here in Fredericksburg in the 60s were led by liberal ministers, one of who was our longest-serving mayor – Lawrence Davies.
Above I described what I see scouts doing around here.

I am close to a family with 2 Eagle Scouts and the third boy is about to become an Eagle. Their father helps out.
When I’ve seen them and the other scouts, they weren’t about politics or religion. They were kids coming together to go camping or looking for prehistoric shark’s teeth or arts & crafts or doing public service projects.
They go hiking and build Indian hogans and ride innertubes down the Rappahannock River.
They’ll also canoe down the Rapidan River and camp out on a 2 or 3 day camping/fishing trip.
They build rope walks and plant flowrs at a highway cloverleaf.
Yeah, they do patriotic stuff like raising the flag and taking it down ceremoniously and they’ll be in the Fourth of July parade downtown.
A lot of them like mountain biking through challenging terrain.
Sometimes they go out and repair or clear paths in local parks.
That’s the kind of things the ones I see are about……

Conservative fixation on transgender children is just creepy.

Conservative fixation on a lot of things is creepy.

Yes. I agree.
But why are they hellbent on forcing trans girls to use the men’s room? It’s creepy.

from my own experience, lo so many years ago, and what I have observed of a family that has 3 Eagle Scouts and the third boy is about to get there.
They go to school with and often play in the neighborhood with the others in their troop.
It’s just kids getting along and parents running things who are giving to their community and it should not be unusual to include an odd kid if he or she wants to be in the little group.
I don’t recall sitting around, trying to figure out if I was a boy or what it meant to be a boy or a girl. They just were
One thing we have to remember is little kids, say 4 or 5 years old, have very little awareness of the differences of the sexes and awareness developes very gradually. Somewhere I saw where trans most kids eventually come around to accepting and believing themselves to be what they really are.
The scouts shouldn’t be involved in all of that. Let the kids get together with the other scouts in the neighborhood each week to do some arts n’ crafts or go hiking or learn how to tie sheepshank knots and never mind that one of the kids is really a girl posing as a guy or vice versa. If one of the kids at the WaWa selling Girl Scout cookies is really a boy posing as a girl I don’t care and I’m going to be polite and a little thankful that the other girls were including him/her into their group. Bravo for them for being nice.
