Michelle: I’ll support Trump because ‘it’s best for the country’

Posted by | December 20, 2016 15:44 | Filed under: Politics

If Trump doesn’t do well, we all suffer.

First lady Michelle Obama said in an interview airing late Monday that the 2016 election was “painful” but that she and President Obama will support Donald Trump as President-elect because it’s “what’s best for the country.”

In a wide-ranging interview with Oprah Winfrey for CBS, Obama said that, “no matter how we felt going into it, it is important for the health of this nation that we support the commander-in-chief.”

“It wasn’t done when my husband took office, but we’re going high, and this is what’s best for the country,” she said, referencing her oft-stated motto during the campaign.

If anyone wants to prove me wrong, I have googled long and hard to find an example from December 2008 of a prominent right winger saying something similar about President-elect Barack Obama. I found nothing to contradict my opinion that President Obama and the First Lady consistently carried themselves with the kind of civility, dignity and class that will be nowhere to be found anywhere near the White House/Capitol Hill corridor after January 20, 2017.

Most of the stuff they said was racist in nature.

We know we will never find any rwnj politician treating President Obama with the respect he deserves for the last 8 years. I refuse to waste time searching for facts, they never used any and the right was able to put the worst person ever in the highest office in the land. If you just keep saying crap over and over again, eventually many believe it is true, and that is my plan until this &^%%%& is removed from office.

That’s what the Republicans have been doing. Don’t be like a Republican. Be better than them.

To quote another great Democratic president (slightly paraphrased as I can’t recall the exact wording, and google isn’t helping), “When you have the law on your side, argue the law. When you have the facts on your side, argue the facts. And when the law isn’t on your side, and when the facts aren’t on your side, bang your hands on the table. Well, we’ve got the law on our side now, and we’ve got the facts on our side now, and we’re banging our hands on the table as loud as we can.”

Don’t let the far-right insanity spread to the rest of the country. Be better than the Republicans.

I know, I am just going through my anger phase at the moment. I will be fine once this person takes “office”. I refuse to say the title and name together, I feel like I will vomit a bit.

I was with the First Lady until I seen who he appointed as his cabinet members, I threw up my hands and I gave up on him entirely.

What’s best for the country is opposing everything, every word every action the republicans make.

    • Glen December 21st, 2016 at 06:20

You want to continue down the rabbit hole that the Republicans took you through over the last 8 years?

What’s best for your country is for calmer heads to prevail, and to consider each word and action on its merits (or lack thereof).

      • Foundryman December 21st, 2016 at 10:13

The failed policy of the past is one of believing we can work with and pretending the republicans will accept some sort of compromise. They have left no doubt that they have no interest at all to meet or make any attempt to allow the left to have anything. They won’t even investigate Russia meddling in our election! Come on!!

Obama spent 8 years and bent over backwards to work with them and all he got in exchange was pushed even further. Every time he met them, they would move the goal posts and demand more.

No Glen, democrats need to meet this threat head on and see it for what it really is, a full frontal attack on our country, our freedoms and our democracy. The republicans declared war on the left, and we sat around like they didn’t mean it. If we don’t change, and fight back hard, we will lose.

        • Glen December 21st, 2016 at 10:49

Your ideology shouldn’t be thrown out for the sake of fighting fire with fire. Do the right thing, consider things on their merits, and work with the Republicans where possible to do so.

And then, in about 20 months time, use the difference in behaviour as further reason for people to vote Democratic, and win back the House and the Senate.

I’m not suggesting that you go quiet and let the Republicans do what they want. I’m not suggesting that you meet them half way and let them move the goal posts. I’m saying that you have to out-think the Republicans and play the long game.

Trump’s rise came from the perception that America’s politicians were ignoring the little guy in favour of playing politics. You play obstructionist now, and it’ll just cement the idea in America’s collective conscious, and next time, maybe it’s Palin. Or Bannon. Or Bachmann, and they win in an actual majority popular vote.

The only way to restore sanity is to be the sane face of politics. The other option is to go with the path that leads to “a pox on both your houses” and, potentially, complete collapse of America.

You fight the war on their ground, you lose. It’s like Mark Twain said, “Never argue with a fool, onlookers may not be able to tell the difference.” – if Democrats play the same foolish game the Republicans do, the American populace won’t be able to tell the difference.

Our parties are both bought and paid for Glen.
            As well as our Government.
            This is no big secret.

            Only time will tell.

Her attitude is exactly the right one. Fight every action that you deem to be wrongheaded (or worse), but you can do that while still respecting the office. Be better than the Republicans were (and are). Take the high road. Be the adult at the table.

  10. Charlie Seivard December 21st, 2016 at 08:29

Take the “high road” but, don’t let them push us off the cliff.

  11. Willys41 December 21st, 2016 at 15:15

MIchelle Obama as usual is perfectly correct, and I’m just as correct in saying screw Trump and screw every last ignorant fool that voted for him.
