Who does he think he is, the president? No, he’s the president-elect.

Donald Trump, who throughout his campaign indicated that the U.S. could abandon its NATO commitments if he became President, is working to remove one of the highest ranking officials at the 67-year-old intergovernmental military alliance, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Officials inside the incoming Trump administration are looking into ways they can dump NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller from the agency, the paper reported. Gottemoeller is an American diplomat who was nominated for the role by President Obama and isn’t well-liked by many Republicans, according to The Post.

According to the newspaper, a Trump transition official met last month with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels and asked him to replace Gottemoeller…

Potential meddling by the Trump administration in NATO, which was formed in part to combat the spread of Soviet-inspired communism by Russia, could also have ramifications on the Trump administration’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump is widely seen as welcoming a cozy relationship with Russia.
